Camel bones suggest error in Bible, archaeologists say

Archaeologists from Israel’s top university have used radiocarbon dating to pinpoint the arrival of domestic camels in the Middle East -- and they say the science directly contradicts the Bible’s version of events.

Camels are mentioned as pack animals in the biblical stories of Abraham, Joseph and Jacob, Old Testament stories that historians peg to between 2000 and 1500 BC. But Erez Ben-Yosef and Lidar Sapir-Hen of Tel Aviv University's Department of Archaeology and Near Eastern Cultures say camels weren’t domesticated in Israel until centuries later, more like 900 BC.

“In addition to challenging the Bible's historicity, this anachronism is direct proof that the text was compiled well after the events it describes,” reads a press release announcing the research.

All this proves is they found camel bones from 900BC. Doesn’t prove camels weren’t there earlier. They just haven’t found them yet.

When Abram sojourned in the land of Canaan, there was no country called Israel. There was no nation called Israel either until Jacob was born, who was renamed Israel after the wrestling match that everyone ought to know about.

The first mention of camels is in Genesis 12:16, and it refers to their being owned by the Pharaoh of Egypt.

This finding doesn’t mean that camels weren’t brought in during earlier periods but not adopted/domesticated until later.

Camels have been around for tens of thousands of years. They were used by migratory/trading people for possibly thousands of years before they were “domesticated” in the newly settled areas of the Middle East.

By the way, Camels are not kosher, and my son, who encountered them in Iraq, say they stink like a cesspool.

My late grandmother did ride a camel in the old Palestine in the 1920’s, and then smoked them for years.

Remember the old joke? How do you like your camels, one hump or two? Neither do I.

That's why I haven't posted my 2 cents worth, including mandatory snide remark about Fx News.

I wonder how many remember the old ad: “I’d walk a mile for a camel”.

See Genesis 43.18: Joseph's brothers are afraid he will make them slaves, and take their donkeys too.

Personally, if I was about to be made a slave, that is what would bother me, not if someone was about to take my donkey.

At any rate the sons of Jacob are depicted as using donkeys as beasts of burden, not camels.

I found five pennies in parking lots in the past month. The oldest penny I found was from 1972 so I’ve concluded that pennies didn’t exist in the 1920s.

An Army Captain is assigned to a remote desert post in Iraq. During inspection, he notices a camel tied up outside the barracks. He asks the soldier, “why is that camel there?”

The soldier says: “There are 250 men here and no women. Sometimes men get urges.”

A month later the Captian has urges himself. He puts the ladder behind the camel, drops his trousers and has sex with the camel. He asks the soldier: “Is that how the men do it?”

“No sir, they usually ride it to the brothel!”

1. Radio carbon dating isn’t that accurate
2. There is a massive presumption that they are testing bones that are uniquely what they think they are, i.e. why are deciding what they haven’t found doesn’t exist?

Excellent deduction.

The science of pennies is now settled.
