1. a hand operated printing press
2. the method to make rag paper
3. a typewriter or the design for a ball point pen

The main downfall of civilization was the lack of the ability to make cheap paper. Why learn to read when you might see two books in your life time?

When Rome held Egypt there was a thriving paper industry and people learned to read if only to read the latest cheap thriller. (Yep they had those too!)

Make paper cheap and printing easy and you avoid the dark ages altogether.

While I was there I would invent the wheelbarrow, the horse collar and general ledger accounting.

1. A portable DVD player.
2. A solar battery.
3. The first season DVD of Lancelot Link Secret Chimp.

Let the people of the 8th century think that's what the future becomes. Somebody might write a book about it.

1) Realistic, valid history book
To set forth the coming Islam storm. To better prepare the Crusades for TOTAL success.

To instruct Europe of the necessary sanitary conditions, causes of the plague.

To set forth the concept, ideals, ideas of the Declaration of Independence/Constitution.

2) All inclusive medical book

3) Doug Henning's Wonderful World of Magic OR the Joy of Cooking (I'll need a job). ;)

Well, HG Wells’ Time Traveler went to the future to fight the Morlocks on the behalf of the Eloi, with only three books, but at least he had an infrastructure with which to work. Going back to 732 AD, all I see is a miserable death by murder, disease, or starvation. Even if you lived, you'd still be miserable - the average American lives better than any king of that era.

I guess if I HAD to go, I'd want a printing press, movable type, and a book on paper-making, ink-formulation, press making, and how to make more movable type... and hope I ended up near a monastery.
