The main downfall of civilization was the lack of the ability to make cheap paper. Why learn to read when you might see two books in your life time?
When Rome held Egypt there was a thriving paper industry and people learned to read if only to read the latest cheap thriller. (Yep they had those too!)
Make paper cheap and printing easy and you avoid the dark ages altogether.
While I was there I would invent the wheelbarrow, the horse collar and general ledger accounting.
