She does have an extremely original voice.

Her 'current' voice is more mainstream. If you catch the stuff when she had just come out of the holller in West Virginia , maybe ten years ago. . . you'll love it, but sometimes it will make your eyes water as you smile and ask for more.

Willie Nasal is NOT one of my faves.

Sorry. He stinks as a singer because every note is sung through his nose, and I HATE that. Not to mention he is a tax evader and and doper. I wouldn’t pay teo cents to see him play. Anywhere.

I didn’t watch the remake of “True Grit.” Actually, it was all I could do to watch the original. As a “swan song” for the Duke, it sucked. Not one of his better movies. IMHO. For what it’s worth...

Not the kind of thing I enjoy, even with John Wayne. I read the book in junior high school, but I didn’t like it.

Re: Willie Nelson. He was, is, and continues to be an unrepentant doper, although I don't think he came remotely close to his tax returns except for signing them (and even then, I'm not certain he was sober when he signed them). I think somebody else probably ripped off a lot of the money that was supposed to go to the feds.

However, his voice is distinctive, isn't it?

As for True Grit, the book was excellent. Of the two movie versions, the Coen Brothers' version is much more true to the book and is a good movie, in my opinion. The version with John Wayne was a comic book in cinema form (although God Bless John Wayne), in my opinion, compared to the Coen Brothers version. I think Glen Campbell's hair throughout the movie said it all. Or the fact that the Arkansas/Indiana Territory was shot in the Rocky Mountains for the John Wayne/Glen Campbell version.

I liked the one where the Keach brothers and the Carradine brothers played the James-Younger gang. I’m from Missouri.

I liked Willie Nelson’s voice, although it’s nearly gone now. He’s still an original songwriter. However, I’m negative about the drug use, and about the increasing incidence of positive references to drug use in contemporary country music. I feel like I spend half my life trying to fight the influence of the crap in pop-culture.

Some really good discussion on the Thread today. Sorry I missed it.

"I think we should all get vintage VW Things and make them the official vehicle of the UT."

No. It's still ugly.

However, original VW Beetles will be acceptable. I was joshing with someone today about the Beetle. I recalled the scene in Woody Allen's "Sleepers" in which he finds a VW parked along a beach, presumably having sat there for many decades. He got in and started it up. "They really knew how to build cars in those days!", he said.

Then my conversant mentioned a comedy film in which someone spotted a VW on the moon, and it also could run!

I don't know which movie that may have been, but I want to talk about the VW anyway.

I told the fellow that a VW could be tricked out to act as an air compressor. With stored air, and an appropriate fuel, a Beetle would be able to operate on the moon pretty much like the Lunar Rover.

I had previously envisioned setting up a "Herbie" style adventure for Mars. But after The Brave Little Toaster went there, there seemed to be no point to sending Herbie.

There’s a Thing in my neighborhood. Darned if I can remember what color it is, though, and I drive by it nearly ever day. I’m getting OLD.

Don’t give up on the interplanetary Beetle: Pat won’t be able to go to Ares if there are toasters there.

"Don’t give up on the interplanetary Beetle: Pat won’t be able to go to Ares if there are toasters there."

I can't make it a Herbie anyway. That would be derivative. I'm thinking a really tricked-out small van.

The Toaster came back.

Wait! You haven't watched "The Brave Little Toaster Goes To Mars"?

Whatever do you do to elevate culture in your staid and unassuming life?

By the way, I hope Pat won’t find it off-putting in regard to visiting the planet Venus.

The entire surface is a toaster.

Of course, the bottom of Earth’s ocean is moderately inhospitable too.

With a little paint job and stretched it doesn't look that bad and you can have for around $50,000 on e_bay .

I wouldn’t want that even if my name were Ben Grimm.

I’m from Missouri.

One set of gg-grandparents was from Missouri (before they came to Texas - my late-comer Texas ancestors). He was from Schuyler County, on the Iowa line, from a family that fought for the Union. She was from Independence, and a stauch Confederate family, with brothers in homespun and butternut and grey. Word is the War Between the States was a forbidden topic in the household.

However, I’m negative about the drug use

Yes. I'm one of those strange characters who now only has never tried pot, but I've never consumed tobacco or an alcoholic beverage - not for religious reasons, just because I didn't and haven't. Some early and very tragic personal experiences (plural) with the affects of drunk driving kept me away from any alcoholic beverages. Completely away.

Well, yeah. Some things are so hideous they have a certain beauty to them. Why do you think Mrs. Scoutmaster is partial to me?

Probably because your bark is no worse than your bite.

We men have it so easy. All we have to do is convince the prettiest girl that we can, to have pity on us.

Look at what they have to choose from.

Shelby County, up in the Northeast. 10 of my dad’s family members were graduates of Kirksville Osteopathic Institute, including his parents.

His cousin now owns the house he grew up in. Anoreth needs to remember that now that she’s 21, all she has to do is call Cousin Barbara and Mr. Jay if she wants to hunt! We’ve got generations of owed-a-favor from all kinds of landowners.

In Mrs. Scoutmaster's case, it was (truthfully, here) more along the lines of her mumbling something about not worrying about having any uneventful days for the rest of her life. She may have had some uneventful days, but many.

I don't know that she looks forward to eventful days with as much vigor as in her earlier years, though, poor girl.

I think I understand this. I have previously stated that I find weekends exciting because I never know whether I well be steeple-jacking, spelunking, or working as an electrician or plumber, or some other equally exciting adventure, and that's just here at my own house.
