A 10-year-old Canadian girl has become the youngest person in the world to find a supernova, the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has confirmed.
Kathryn Gray was studying images taken at an amateur observatory when she spotted the magnitude 17 supernova in the galaxy UGC 3378, in the constellation of Camelopardalis.

Ping!
I’m glad to hear that there is actually a western kid with the interest.
“Supernova found by 10-year-old Canadian girl”
________
Geez. I didn’t even know one was missing. Congrats to her.
This is one reason I love astronomy. It’s not a locked up science so amateurs can still make discoveries, and in their own back yards.
cool
Well, they are rather massive and hot...which makes them a lot easier to retrieve.
Did you see those scopes! From the interview, they must have a nice camera setup.
Congrats to her!
We talk about the scopes we have now in our local astronomy club and compare them to what the giants of astronomy had back 100 years ago. Those guys would have killed to have some of these things. Even today, the equipment that amateurs have is better than most of the scopes the Pros get to use. Only the really advanced Pros get to use the big stuff and their time is limited. We amateurs are only limited by our free time.
I hear that there is a guy that goes to Oke-Tex that has a 36 inch Dob that he brings out. Just for personal use!
The BBC seems to think that “found” and “discovered” are synonyms. That’s not quite true.
