Mosquito Shot Down By a Laser
LiveLeak ^ | 2010 Feb 12

Posted on 02/12/2010 8:41:24 AM PST by Wiz

You're looking at a mosquito who got taken down mid-flight by a laser gun designed by Nathan Myhrvold. The malaria-carrying pest never saw it coming, but you can watch everything happen over and over again in this video.

The idea behind the laser is that it could be used to control mosquito populations in developing countries in hopes of reducing the number of deaths due to malaria, a disease f More..requently carried by the flying insects. The device was shown off during the TED 2010 conference and does in fact appear to be capable of tracking and killing mosquitoes.

If the laser isn’t attached to a frickin’ shark’s head...I’m not interested.

I’m guessing its the green alternative to pesticides and only costs 10,000 times as much.

“The mosquito’s a clever little bastard. You can track him for days and days until you really get to know him like a friend. He knows you’re there, and you know he’s there. It’s a game of wits. You hate him, then you respect him, then you kill him.”

Turn your frequency generator into a
super powerful mosquito repeller!

Dragonflies are the mortal enemy for mosquitoes and in flight they generate sound frequencies (approximately) between 67 Hz and 45 Hz, depending on their sizes.

56 Hz is a good average number in between those frequencies. Your PC sound card and speakers will work well for this purpose. There are many sound and tone generator programs available on the internet for both the Mac and Windows PC. If you do not have a sound generator program, you can download a free version for Windows HERE.

Setup your computer with the sound/tone generator program running and then play the sound through your computer speakers. The speakers can be aimed directionally for complete room coverage.

The sound level on the speakers should be adjusted so it is barely audible. This arrangement can be setup in a bedroom where you would like to have the window open but are worried about mosquitoes. One speaker should be fairly close to where you are sleeping.

Here are some links to more advanced tone generator software which can actually sweep between the 45 Hz and 67 Hz frequencies:

This same setup can also be used with various advanced frequency generators such as the GB-4000 or an EMEM Ray Tube device. Instead of using computer software, just program the chosen frequencies into your frequency generator and run them in the desired area. Many users report that this setup will keep mosquitoes away in an area of over 60 feet from the generator.

If we can target a mosquito, we can target an ICBM. Bring back “star wars”.

Bump for afterwork viewing. This could be really cool, you could set it to cover a area diameter of your choice, maybe kill flies too?

Green? Lasers don't run on love. Though the "10,000 as much $$$" is probably right.
