Good morning to all of you gardeners. Well it looks like the weather is going to be cooling down in the Midwest, East Coast and parts of the South starting today and continuing through the weekend. Wow it is looking like September in July! Our plants are going to be confused!

Well you just ran into a bunch of "Just plain ol good, God fearing-loving folks" here on the Freeper Weekly Gardening thread. There are some amazing FReepers with a lot of experience at gardening who love sharing their life long knowledge of gardening and other interests.

I am just a novice gardener and can't wait to post the thread every Friday morning because I know there are a bunch of FReepers going to post answers to problems or just share their experience and expertise.

I recently bought Jalepeno Honey, crazy good.

I live up by the Mich/In line, is it too late to plant green beans and red beets?

Got my first cuke today! Some yellow pears, a couple of cherry tomatos. The jalapenos just keep going.... and going... and going.

AAAARRRRKKK the big birds ....and we have plenty...The Eagles moved in a year or so ago....Owls, vultures, turkeys won’t hurt the chickens...But the hawks..... Have trouble even keeping fish in pond with the blue herons, small blues and night herons....and occasional Ospry....

Even Rascal runs from their shadows, she doesn’t look up to see what it is. An Owl swooped down over her when she was a puppy, ALL big birds now produce a run to the porch..

Chickens are sounding less and less of a possibility

Sweet cornis grown commercially in the holler...Several farmers have put irrigation systems in from the river....need lots of water at the right time I’m told....I don’t grow it, most of my garden is in raised bed, a modified lasagna/square foot gardening method.

It’ just too cheap to buy to worry about messing with it. Same with any melon. Can buy them for a quarter or fifty cents...Bussel of second corn is almost a give a way.

Family in Elkhart, Angola area.

Beets can be planted as a fall crop.: Beets turnips, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, onions.

As far as the beans go, we use a short seasoned green bean and get a double crop, if we don’t get an early frost...

OTOH Our temp and seasons are quite different than the northern part of the state. Have about a month extra in the growing season.

We don’t have any fruit on our trees this year either. Last year was the first year we had cherries, but none this year. We’ve had apples in past years, but none this year. The apple trees have severe cases of cedar rust this year - lots of cedar trees in the area. Will have to look into what to do better for fruit trees for next year.

Just bought 2 more blueberries (already bought 2 tiny ones earlier) and 2 blackberrys, and a seedless concord grape. Need to get them in the ground. May purchase another grape over at Home Depot, they’ve got a big truckload sale going.

Forgive my ignorance but what are “pullets”? Sounds like whatever they are I need some.....

pullets = Girl Chickens
roosters = Boy chickens.

Our Boys free range all day, and have done a job on the bugs. The girls I keep penned up, because the boys are good roosters and I don't have that many girls.

I thought that pullets are “girl chickens” while hens are “woman chickens,” and that cockerels are “boy chickens” while roosters are “man chickens,” so to speak, like this:

Babies: peeps (either sex)

Children: pullets (female) and cockerels (male)

Adults: hens (female) and roosters (male)

Those are the proper terms....OTOH some varieties are difficult to sex until they are mature....cross dressing and all;~)

You have to use so much 8 that it isn’t cost effective. Organic gardening here? BWAHAHA

The bugs would love you! Not to mention the diseases.

I have lots of good stuff too. it’s just that there are more bad things than good things.

Saw a bunch of frog eggs in a puddle the other evening. Went out the next am to get some for gbaby to watch. They were gone—all gone.

Wish I could turn the guineas loose. Too many things like them as well.

Sometime you are not sure till they crow or lay an egg. We have two New Hampshire Reds that we were not sure of. Both are boys, but they get mounted like the girls. I have a couple of "confused" roosters.
They are fun to watch run around the farm. One of the reds was on the back porch eying the tomatoes, he was quickly removed. All in all the chickens have been good for the garden, for the most part they don't bother the plants when they have bugs.

Never have a rooster with your chickens if you plan on eating the eggs.

They get specks of blood in the eggs and it is disgusting!

We eat the eggs all the time, it is not a problem, and we keep a roo, with the hens. I only keep one roo with the hens, the others run around the farm.

I would think a hound dog would keep the predators out of your chickens.

My dog would be completely ineffectual against a bird of prey OR a pullet
- mostly blind, completely dumb...but lovable!

I see "chicken tractors" on the net. You could build a sturdy one of those and move it around to different spots that needed the "attention". Stake it down to keep the predators from getting under the edge.

Thanks for the ping! I have been looking forward to it al week. Did you see those cantaloupes? OMG.

Well we have found 3 acres we like pretty well and are making a bid. I am really looking forward to getting out there this fall and getting the ground already so I can be planting next spring. You bet I am gonna be planting some melons like that. Wow. I also like the way he has trellissed the peppers, cukes, and tomatoes.

I ordered Jeavon's book tis week so it will be arriving soon.

Thanks again.

Depends on the type of hound...We had one that would cahase them and bring them chicken to you....usually dead (probably died of fright)

Our border collie will herd things. In fact just read that if you have a Canadian Goose problem, get a border collie, they will keep them out of their area.

We walked her around the border of the property as instructed the first weeks we owned her...She doesn’t leave or allow anything else on. When the horse tries to stick his head through the fence...She lets her know it’s NOT ACCEPTABLE behavior in a not too timid way.

Very loving and “takes care” of dad. Wakes me if he’s up at night. Tattles on him when she thinks he’s doing something wrong....She has been the perfect dog for him and for our “farm”...Very smart and minds well.
