I'm considering buying a new pick-up. Why new? Because it will most likely be the last vehicle I'll ever buy and I want it to last.
So, I was looking at Ford F150s last night and my jaw dropped. One of the trucks was priced at $66,000!! For crying out-loud! $66K?? The one I liked the best was priced at $49,000! I'm in real estate and you can buy property cheaper!
I thought perhaps some of the more experienced, wiser freepers could answer this question: Just how much does it actually cost to manufacture/produce one of these? (Or any other model for that matter)
Finally, I do realize government b.s. regulations factor in to the cost but I can't imagine regulations causing such obscene pricing.
Thanks in advance.
“Plus, it seems like folks don’t care about thing like credit scores anymore.”
Actually, from by used-car dealership bud, they care about your credit score,
What they DONT care about is your legal status in CA. As long as you can make the payments AND your credit score “hovers” around 600 (at least), you are good to go. And in the past year, NO REPO company did their jobs because once they do, it goes to court and they side with the non=paying deadbeat due to COVID.
Yeah...I don’t need all that! I guess people (young) got hooked on that crap.
I do buy new, it is my intention to keep it for the rest of my life.

LOL! I think most people probably do. I felt that way with the two new ones I bought before I got smart. The first one was totaled by a drunk (not me), and the second one was stolen and never recovered. Probably shipped to Africa!
FCA had a 7% profit built in for the basic Jeep, with 13% on package upgrades. In 2018, they introduced a turbocharged straight-four engine into the lineup. The introduction stalled, such as to build an inventory glut on the dealer’s lot. Two years ago, incentives dropped the price $5000 to $13,000 from the MSRP, depending upon the package.
That’s just sad.
I saw cars on crackheads list that were selling more privately then at the stealership
I look for value, not just price
I think a car a few years old with low miles is a better value then a car that is 8 years old pushing 150k on the clock.
At that age and mileage you are starting to look at major repairs even if it was maintained well.
I would rather pay a little more for a better long term value then just focus on price. If that means buying from a stealership, then so be it.
And if you plan on keeping the car or truck for life, it might not be a bad idea to buy a brand new one, that way you know EVERYTHING about the vehicle and what was done. Where as older used cars it is really just a lucky shot in the dark, even with car fax records.
Truck used to be the working mans vehicle or farm vehicle...
Then when fuel standards went into effect...they did not apply to trucks because a smaller truck is worthless to farmers and construction...they had a mileage standard but it was set higher than for cars
So the truck became the suv and vehicle for large families..
Almost NONE on Craigslist and normally, they would have them and they are at USED car prices, same as 30K. Unreal.

I read recently, I think on FR, that used vehicles are becoming increasingly hard to find, and prices are rising to reflect the shortage.
My bad. I’m talking about the potential buyers. Dealers and Dina e companies certainly do.
But here in the Atlanta metro area, there’s a Chevy dealer that advertises that folks with bad credit will have a chance and talk about people with scores in the low 500s get a brand new Silverado.
No idea what his payments are but it does t seem like they turn many away.
a year ago i stumbled across a 1988 ford f250 xlt lariat heavy duty extra cab with the fuel efficient 460 fuel injected v8 with 90,000 original documented miles on it that was advertised on craigslist...
no rust, no dents, had a couple minor dings and scratches on original paint and a never smoked in almost perfect interior...
bought it for $2000 and still driving it...
good buys are out there, you just have to patiently and diligently look for them and be prepared to jump when they arise...
There’s been a loss of production due to COVID and an international semiconductor shortage. Couple that with lots of free govt money and business is strong.
He had an F150 with almost 250K on it.

Where I live it’s common for guys to say, “Hell it’s just broke in” when referring to any pickup with 250K or less!
right on! haha!
Yes if you calculate the useful life vs cost, the numbers are still pretty good.
It wasn’t so long ago that 100,000 miles was useful life.
Oh yeah. I’ve been told by my bud that people have to realize, every time you apply for a car loan, you get a soft hit from the big 3 credit bureaus. AND the company will call your workplace to verify. MOST times, with these 2 measures, they get rejected, which worsens your credit score.
You really..really have to think twice about that dream car, and you may have to do it once, when applying. As stated here in Ca, the “approved” max interest rate is 25% which is ridiculous.
Jeez, how fast was she going to flip it?
Also, check Kelly Blue Book. You can surf for vehicles miles away from where you live from your couch. There is also alot of good information on their site. You can customize what you are looking for or look at everything. Its a great way to spend a rainy day! I bought (stole) a convertible about a year ago (just at the beginning of covid) that only had 2000 miles on it! WOW! The market was really depressed at that time.
I can get you a Friends and Family discount on Fords.
My 1997 F150 is still running. Manual 5 speed. 6 cyl. Can’t vouch for the newer ones but i would buy another. Think i paid $14,000 for it. Inflation sucks.
My local craigslist has some nice trucks. I would for sure buy old and used and put money into it. The trick is to be patient and sleep on everything.
