Was Trump's Endorsement of Congresswoman Ellmers Reverse Psychology?

The Donald can now say he tried to help the GOPe maintain the House majority, but the conservative base are speaking and it's beyond his control in case he gets pushback from Ryan and his Chamber of Commerce peeps.

Of course, the Left and reprobates like Erik Erickson (Thanks Mods/Jim for pulling that thread, Redstate is dead to me) will spin it and say that Trump has no coattails or whatever, but they couldn't be more wrong. Trump's not a traditional politician. He's going to make these types of moves because it's good to get criticism from the base, which will help him with Independents and disaffected Bernie supporters in the general.

So, Trump's endorsement of Ellmers, IMO, is what it is. It doesn't mean he's backtracking or selling-out. It just means that he's trying to work with the GOPe (on his terms) and show the voters that he's not this scary, racist extremist (wink-wink)

It's a wake up call that folks are going to vote backstabbers out of office. As Trump says, it's a movement. It should also be a wakeup call to Trump to not pander to insider pols.

Turnout was low. Despite the big media buys, it was a nearly invisible primary, following sweeping and unnecessary changes in the district, posting a three-way contest between two still fresh incumbents and an under-funded (but semi-credible challenger) over a lot of new territory.

I'll bet Holding's donors spent a record-breaking price for each vote, and Elmers built up a considerable amount of ill-will since beating a particularly nasty old guard liberal and establishment Democrat a few years back, since then pissing off her base on illegal immigration, clearly placing the Chambers of Communists along the Potomac ahead of the folks back home.

She probably begged Trump to endorse her, and he had political coin to spare. It won't hurt him.

Still, the low turnout was the biggest factor, and the reasons for that had nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with judge shopping by NC Democrats and a judiciary, in this case, with no respect for the letter of the law or for the convenience of voters.
