Armed Doctor Who Opened Fire on Active Shooter in Hospital Shooting Could Lose His Job July 25 2014 by Dan Cannon Share This Post

As we reported yesterday, it would seem that an armed doctor in Pennsylvania prevented a possible mass shooting at the hospital he was working at.

The doctor managed to land several chest hits on the suspect after he had shot another person and wounded the doctor.

However, despite his heroic, likely life saving acts, the doctor (identified as Lee Silverman), may end up unemployed as gratitude.

According to the Employee Code of Conduct for Mercy Health System [emphasis mine],

9. Health and Safety…

…Employees are prohibited from bringing firearms or explosives of any kind into the workplace.

Philly.com elaborated further, and also included some praise for the doctor,

It was not clear why Silverman, a doctor for nearly 25 years, was armed at the office. Bernice Ho, a spokeswoman for Mercy Fitzgerald, said Thursday it was against hospital policy for anyone other than security guards to carry weapons.

Donald Molineux, chief of the Yeadon Police Department, said that if Silverman returned fire and wounded Plotts, he “without a doubt saved lives.”

It’s looking the doctor may face some sort of career harming penalty at best or possibly termination at worst. Being terminated for violating such a policy may also put the doctor’s license to practice medicine at risk.

Doctors don’t stay unemployed for long.

He’ll get work in a much better neighborhood, too.

I suspect that he’ll have no difficulty finding another hospital to practice at. The company I work for has a similar policy - and one that I ignore every single day.

Nice shooting there Doc!

Perhaps because he knew he was dealing with homicidal crazies and that the hospital wasn't providing adequate security. Even the hospitals here in Texas have 'no gun' signs on their attached medical office buildings.

The shootings of a mass murderer are the actions of an unstable mind and therefore are excusable and the shooter should be treated with compassion. The shooting by someone defending himself and others is rational action and therefore deliberate violence and as such must be severely punished. That is what the left believes. I have had this discussion with a now professor and with other leftists.

The policy is there for insurance reasons. Stupid but the lawyers got BMW payments to make.

Save lives, lose your job. It’s one of those “fundamentally transformed” things. The commie libs believe in letting nature run its course. They love mass killings too. They score lots of political points against the Bill of Rights each time one of these mass killings occur.

Well it came in handy!

Seriously, Liberals find an innocent victim shot to death by criminal thugs morally superior to an armed citizen defending them self.

They are threatening to take his license for it. It sounds like he was also one of those shot, if I’m reading the article correctly. Surely that would make it self defense.

So far as being armed, my defense would be: “I was in a rush to get there and simply forgot I had it.”

If the hospital receives any public funds whatsoever, I’d argue the 2d amendment.

You know, if you ever need to make it known that you’re violating their policy,

it will be a matter of “do I die or get fired”.

That’s an easy choice.

Doctors don’t stay unemployed for long.

Yep. And he's still alive to seek an alternate employer too. Just a side benefit to concealed carry. Not to mention that the entire wing of that facility ought to throw this guy a big party for likely saving their lives.

Ok, please tell me that I'm not so big of a sci-fi nerd that I was the only one who read that headline as:

"Armed Doctor Who, opened fire....

Instead of "Armed Doctor, who opened fire...."

My first thought was, which actor that played "Doctor Who"? and how did he get a gun? I thought they were banned in Britain....

News report and news video here:

“Police believe there was a gunfire exchange between the doctor and suspect. According to Whelan, two guns were retrieved from the scene. The suspect did have psychiatric issues and was a patient, according Whelan.

“We believe there were two guns retrieved at scene, one with perpetrator and one the doctor possessed. At this point and time it needs to be verified. We believe doctor was acting in self-defense, “ said DA Whelan.”

UPDATE HERE:

Psych patient shoots two at Darby hospital, doctor returns fire
A social worker was killed

A troubled patient opened fire on a caseworker and psychiatrist in a small office at a unit of Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Delaware County on Thursday afternoon, police said, leading the doctor to draw his own weapon and shoot the assailant.

The confrontation left the caseworker, 53-year-old Theresa Hunt, dead and the 52-year-old psychiatrist, a veteran doctor at the hospital whom sources identified as Lee Silverman, with a graze wound to the head. The patient, Richard Plotts, was in critical condition Thursday night from three gunshot wounds.

An unemployed physicians - if competent - can find employemnet easily and contribute to society.

He should not worry.

And we - as a country - will not improve until we make sure that virtually ALL of our idiot politicians are unemployed.

That’s as in welfare unemployment, with assured prison time if they disgrace our country by doing anything other than eating and cr*pping.

As usual, the responses below the Philly.com article are even more entertaining reading for the level of denial of reality by the libs. I hope the doctor finds even more lucrative employment, should he be fired.

Besides, that doctor refuses to carry! Though I’ve noticed he often doesn’t mind having armed UNIT personnel at hand! (”attack pattern delta!”)

It was not clear why Silverman, a doctor for nearly 25 years, was armed at the office.

In hindsight, it is very clear why he was armed at the office.
