The shootings of a mass murderer are the actions of an unstable mind and therefore are excusable and the shooter should be treated with compassion. The shooting by someone defending himself and others is rational action and therefore deliberate violence and as such must be severely punished. That is what the left believes. I have had this discussion with a now professor and with other leftists.

"Deliberate violence" is a curious thing to condemn because it can often be to save the lives of the one using it and others. Violence, per se, is not to be condemned; it is wrong when it is criminal, but entirely right and moral when it's to stop crime.
