In the lead-up to Independence Day, I thought it would be interesting to get your opinion on who was the greatest U.S. president. I have my own view, which Ill share in a July 4 posting. Historians have their take, as well, consistently ranking FDR and Lincoln at the top of the list. I'll be using the results in my AP Government class, so please participate!
You can also reach the poll through direct link at: Who was the greatest President of the United States?

If you read the ugly history of those times, the unbiased observer can see that the real tyrant of the age was Jefferson Davis. Lincoln deserves the gratitude of all Southerners for liberating the South from the cruel tyranny of the slave power.
reagan was more in the middle i think, but was a great prez, i think sarah palin is more to the right than reagan was— sarah is a pure capitalist like calvin coolidge was..she believes in extremely small gov. like calvin did.. any thoughts about that, or am i wrong?
Hard to believe there are people who still are hanging on the Paulbot bandwagon.
The guy is a wacko and hypocrite to boot
LOL, a real side splitter there!

Next tier, I'd have Reagan for his facing down of the the Soviet threat.
The worst were Wilson, LBJ and Carter, typical big government Southern Democrats. I wouldn't yet put President Obama into this hall of shame but he still has the potential to make this group.
FDR's big government sins are somewhat mitigated by the extraordinary times and the fact that he did lead the country to the threshold of victory in its greatest foreign war.
You don’t think Jefferson Davis suspended habeas corpus throughout the South, presided over widespread oppression and extortion of Southerners and generally ruled through a reign of terror in Dixie? Lincoln haters make much of his “tyranny” but the worst prospect a dissenter could usually expect in the North was a possible visit to jail and that only if his activites posed a strong danger to the war. In the South, a dissenter better have been ready to run because he was in danger of the hangman’s noose or worse. Hitler, Himmler, Stalin and Beria would have proud of the Confederate police state.
I agree that Coolidge was not portrayed accruately by history books, and that the “Globalist” intellectual Wilson’s impact was white washed and greatly exagerated by same.
Darn people who forget the sarcasm tags might as well be yelling "Howard Stern" .
Washington 37% and Reagan 40%.
I don’t think so.
I love Reagan, but Washington’s contribution was a multi-generational effect that lasted hundreds of years. The founders were Giants who are little appreciated today.
Washington, obviously. Without him ,there would not have BEEN a United States. At least not for years, perhaps several decades after the nation DID come into being.
Lincoln The best of the best.
Washington Always credit for being the first President
Eisenhower A great military president (plus I was stationed on his ship so I feel a bit of loyalty).
Reagan
The worst
Carter
Pierce
Bush I
Obama
Reagan was great but he didn’t exactly kick Democrats butt. Remember they fooled him into supporting amnesty. You can’t be saying he kicked butt if they tricked him that easily.
I don’t believe that Sarah can even be compared. It is so easy to give speeches when you have absolutely no responsibility. You have to wait and see how she will be as President before you start comparing her especially to Reagan. When you are in the big chair it is not easy. Look at Obama, he thought giving speeches was wonderful but he forgot that you actually have to work as President. She will have a big awakening if she becomes President.
What about the “Father of the Constitution” James Madison also supervised the Louisiana Purchase. Got us through the war of 1812
1) denying the rights of habeas corpus;
2) ignoring the Supreme Court, as was done in the Merryman Case;
3)jailing legislators of states loyal to the Union, as was done in Maryland;
4) shutting down dissenting newspapers, as was done in New York, Ohio, and Illinois;
5) arresting unfriendly political opponents and trying them in military courts and vanishing them from the United States, as was done to Representative Clement Vallandigham of Ohio;
6) creating a new state out of a portion of another state in flagrant violation of Article 4, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution as was done by the creation of the state of West Virginia.
7)attack upon legally held property, both slave and non-slave property;
8)the institution of a gradual income tax;
9) the establishment of an indivisible government capable of acting in whatever manner needed to create a socialist utopia
It really should be “who is the 2nd greatest us president?”
Washington is above all other because of his rejection of power that he could have kept, his rejection of parties as a way to run this republic, and because of his commitment to integrity.
Second place is by time period:
Past President: Jefferson
Recent President: Ronald Reagan
Thanks for making the point about Lincoln. I agree completely.
Washington remains the first in every sense.
Ha! Thomas Jefferson, the Bubba Clinton of the 19th century!
Washington, Lincoln, Reagan...in that order.
