A white police officer in North Charleston, South Carolina has been charged with murder after video emerged of him shooting an unarmed black man in the back while he was trying to run away, reports the Charleston Post and Courier. The two had been involved in a scuffle.
The man, 50-year-old Walter Scott, died Saturday after Patrolman 1st Class Michael Slager, 33, shot at him eight times, though it is not immediately clear how many shots hit him. Scott had been stopped for a broken tail light, and he ran from police because he owed child support, said his family, according to New York Times reporter Matt Apuzzo.
On Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Keith Summey said that the officers bad decision had led to his arrest on the charge of murder.

Don't grab the officer's taser/gun/baton. Don't fight with the officer. Don't run from the scene. And don't resist planted evidence by your dead body either.

There are many places to live outside of the ‘armpit’ to live that the residents don’t have to have metal bars on windows and doors. Just do a little research and come on down.

5 observations:
1) The rush to judgement based on a single video is disgusting. While this doesn't look good at all, a video is not an objective documentary. There is no harm in waiting: waiting for all the information and evidence to come out, and waiting for the other side of the story. It does no harm at all to simply wait, and resist the temptation to rush to judgement.
2) The video shows no evidence of premeditation, or malice leading into the incidence. There is a huge difference between killing someone after planning to do so, and killing someone in the heat of the moment.
3) Rightly or wrongly, a non-police officer shooting someone after an altercation is generally not going to get the death penalty. Cops shouldn't be held to lower standards, of course; but they shouldn't be held to higher ones, either. It should be borne in mind that the only reason they are dealing with low-lifes, thugs, and criminals, is so the rest of us don't have to. He shouldn't be penalized more a non-police officer would be.
4) Throughout most of history, fleeing from the police has been a good way to get yourself killed. He may not have deserved death, but he was an idiot.
5) It doesn't look good for the cop at all. An example will be made of him, and it is an example that will probably lead to his death, either directly or indirectly. This will occur, regardless of any exculpatory or mitigating evidence. Disgustingly, this is because he is white, and the victim is not.

Every case this cop was involved with is going to be scrutinized. No way was this a one time event, it was probably the culmination of a long series of incidents.

I will say, looking at the video, it doesn’t look good. I have a serious problem (I think I saw it right), but wasn’t the 2nd cop there when the taser was throw down near the victim. I want to see the police reports from the 2nd officer and see him too charged and fired.
But having said the above, I live in Texas and I do believe the “castle law” gives you the right to shoot a person who takes something from your person, car and home. I think Joe Horn shot those 2 guys in the back (I could be wrong) put he got “no billed.”
Oh my God that would drive the black community over the top, especially with that video.

Your response makes no sense, given what I said.
Me: fleeing has commonly led to getting yourself killed (paraphrased).
You: No it hasn’t, it was common.

Running from cops was common in the past.
In fact, fighting cops was not uncommon in the past.

We’ll see. The family seems pretty level headed about it. They might not want him around.

My husband and I was pulled over by a cop after midnight for speeding 5 mph over the speed limit. I had too much to drink, my husband was the driver and was completely sober. When the cop smelled alcohol in the car, he became very abusive. Screaming and being very disrespectful. He became angry when my husband passed the field sobriety test and breathalyzer. At no time did the cop even suspect that I was the drunk passenger. At one point, I thought he was going to hit my husband who was cooperating fully with the field test. I got unsteadily out of the car because I was afraid for my husband. Thinking back on it now, I could have easily been shot. His partner ran toward me with fear in his face, telling me to get back in the car. This was a power hungry crazed cop. He let us go without a ticket , probably because we would have obtained his name. It was one of the most scariest situations that I have ever been in I have lost a lot of respect for the police.I am afraid of them. When you lose the support from law abiding citizens in this country, the police need to take a hard look at their own behavior.

Hate to break it to you, but they're basically the same thing. How so, you ask?
I imagine a prison sentence for a police officer will most likely result in his death at the hand of another inmate.

The problem now is that since there was no conclusive video from Ferguson, people are going to think that it was covered up... There could have been conclusive video from Ferguson and people would still have thought there was a cover up. Just like people around here can watch that video and say, "Let's not rush to judgement. There's more to it than the video shows."
