Excellent article Lock..The truth is our spiritual forefathers all brought their own bias to the scriptures and each of us do

We can pray for wisdom and discernment but we are still fallible.

It is the rejection of the early creeds that marks cults..

"Proponents of solo scriptura have deceived themselves into thinking that they honor the unique authority of Scripture. But unfortunately, by divorcing the Spirit-inspired Word of God from the Spirit-indwelt people of God, they have made it into a plaything and the source of endless speculation."

Sounds dangerously Roman to me!!

Solo scriptura also undermines the legitimate ecclesiastical authority established by Christ. It negates the duty to submit to those who rule over you, because it removes the possibility of an authoritative teaching office in the Church. To place any kind of real hermeneutical authority in an elder or teacher undermines the doctrine of solo scriptura. Those adherents of solo scriptura who do have pastors and teachers to whom they look for leadership do so under the stipulation that the individual is to evaluate the leader’s teaching by Scripture first. What this means in practice is that the individual is to measure his teacher’s interpretation of Scripture against his own interpretation of Scripture. The playing field is leveled when neither the ecumenical creeds nor the Church has any more authority than the individual believer, but Christ did not establish a level playing field. He did not establish a democracy.

Skimmed the article from the link and this jumped out at me. Thought it was worth posting.

God bless.

Gee, what those poor folk do between the 1st and 4th centuries when the first version of the Bible was assembled?
Must have all been damned?

Each man will claim that the other is in error, but by what ultimate authority do they typically make such a judgment? Each man will claim that he bases his judgment on the authority of the Bible, but since each man’s interpretation is mutually exclusive of the other’s, both interpretations cannot be correct. How then do we discern which interpretation is correct?

Good question. Sounds like someone is unwittingly on the road to Catholicism. The Bible teaches us that the Church which Christ founded is "the pillar and foundation of truth" and Jesus tells us to take our disputes "to the church." "If he will not listen to the Church, then treat him as a pagan or tax collector." How can disputes be settled if each man is a church unto himself?

"Solo Scriptura" is simply Sola Scriptura taken to its logical conclusion.

Just read the balance of the thread today. Nice work, Aquinasfan and Catholicguy. You shredded the arguments of your adversaries.

Lockeliberty, a good post that resulted in interesting discussions and a relative minimum of bigotry and Catholic bashing. Passionate argument over serious issues is what makes FR worthwhile.

Joshua, you contributed nothing worthwhile to the discussion. Your bile about priests and children did not pass unnoticed. Like other Catholic Bashers on this thread--such as the malevolent Naughty Nurse who always pops up at these gigs like a rash--your hatred of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church is all too apparent. As a proclaimed man of the Bible, you should know that Saint Paul said if you lack love then you're just a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. Well that's you, pal. Clanging away noisily. How sad.
