I thought everybody loved Thomas Merton! I don't care for his writings either, but I have never, ever found anyone who agreed with me. I didn't know he was a friend of FORMER Bishop Weakland.

Most conservative Catholics I know don't like Merton either.
(And Praise God that Weakland is now our FORMER Archbishop!)

I had a friend in Alaska who was taken with him. I read his "Seven-Storey Mountain" when I was in High School. It was a good read, but I was never very impressed with his later work, especially all his New Agey mumbo-jumbo and the free verse he was so fond of penning. I always felt a little "check" in my spirit when I heard someone cheering for him.

Technically, Weakland is STILL a Bishop.
And Weakie was the one who found Merton dead in the shower, as he tells the story.
