U.S. BISHOP SAYS CHURCH CRISIS ABOUT "DISSENT ON SEXUAL MORALITY"

Voice of Faithful Catholic Laity Was Shut Out of Dallas Conference

LINCOLN, Neb., July 17, 2002 (LSN.ca) - Bishop Fabian W. Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska commented on the crisis in the Catholic church as being all about "dissent" in a recent interview on Eternal Word Television Network. Speaking with Raymond Arroyo of EWTN's "The World Over" program, Bishop Bruskewitz said, "the whole problem quite frankly is precisely dissent" on issues of "sexual morality."

The bishop noted his disappointment with the June bishops' conference dealing with the sexual abuse matter. He noted that the voice of faithful Catholic laity was shut out of the conference. The two people present to represent the laity were "not at all" representative of faithful Catholic laity, he said, pointing out that one of the presenters - Margaret Steinfels - is an open dissenter to church doctrine on sexual matters.

Bishop Bruskewitz registered a complaint with the bishops conference regarding the two speakers. "I have better things to do with my time and money than to listen to Margaret Steinfels" he said.

>Communion in the hand?<

Communion at our church is by intinction (sorry about the spelling)

>Eucharistic ministers?<

No

>A Consecration that changes the very words that Christ spoke?<

I'm not sure what you mean by this. I know our priests use the Latin Novus Ordo which I understand is different from the Tridentine. Are the words spoken during Consecration exactly the same in these two Rites?

>Face to face confessions?<

You are allowed to go face to face but, behind the screen is encouraged and most Confess this way, I do.

>Altar girls?<

Nope

It tells me there's something wrong with the modernists who will misuse and abuse anything to further their agenda. To answer your questions in #9, "no".

I don't really understand your question; I hop the following will answer it:
At the time of which I speak, I had never heard of the SSPX. I was a travelling stranger, in a strange town, on a Sunday, looking for the nearest Catholic Mass. The nearest was something claiming "The Traditional Latin Mass", or some such verbiage. It also billed itself as Catholic, so off I went. (I was young, and foolish then). "The Traditional Latin Mass" turned out to be what we call the Tridentine Mass, which was vaguely familiar to me from childhood. Instead of preaching, the priest ranted about the evils of the Novus Ordo, that it wasn't a real Mass, and that anyone who ever attended it was committing a mortal sin by so doing. I spoke with a number of parishoners after Mass, who in a very self-righteous manner amplified on the theme. I discussed the incident with my Dad some time later, and found out what I had blundered into.

What parish do you attend, and in what city? (Your profile doesn't even tell me what State you live in.) BTW, the Latin of the NOM is readily available. Instead of talking about what you "suspect" the words are, why don't you find out?

Parishes like St. Timothy in Chantilly and Our Lady of Angels in Woodbridge meet the description I gave. And I'm not going to argue about the proper translation of "pro multis"; such arguement will not see any resolution in this forum.

OBTW, I've seen a wide variety of abuses at heterodox Novus Ordo Masses, but I've never heard any priest use other than the approved English translation, or the original Latin, of the words of consecration. (Never been to, eg, a Spanish Mass.)

1) Yes. About half actually do.
2&3) I haven't a clue.

Same answers regarding OLA. Like I said, they meet the description I gave. Now you're throwing new requirements at me. You must be a project manager. :)

OBTW, have you ever seen how they do confessions in the Byzantine Rite? I have. I guarantee you, there's no 'screen', or even a confessional. They've a big Ikon of Our Lord, up in front of the church. The priest stands on the left side, the penitent stands in front, facing the Ikon, all in full view of the congregation, and they do the confession. It's plenty private, though, as the congregation and the cantors are chanting Vespers or some such thing the whole time. Only the priest, and God, can hear the confession. The confessional is a Western invention.

>Is this the Byzantine rite?<

No, Latin. We still have our alter rail too. So, we recieve by mouth while kneeling.

I live in Charlotte, NC and attend St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church (yes it's SSPX).

Maybe you can help me. I'm coming down your way next week, to North Carolina that is . I'll be staying with a good friend who lives just north of Charlotte sorta in between Gastonia and Charlotte. Her mailing address is Iron Station. Anyway, can you direct me to a good Mass, Novus Ordor or Tridentine if there is an Indult? Please don't get mad at me, I'm trying to do what is right and I know my husband would not be happy with me if I brought my daughters to a Mass not approved by the local Bishop. Don't get me wrong, I do hope one day our Bishop up here in Detroit will agree to the Tridentine Mass. It is beautiful and works much better with Orchestra Masses than the Novus Ordo.

Eucharistic ministers?

Properly speaking, only a Priest, who alone confects the Eucharist, can be called a 'Eucharistic minister'.

The proper term you're looking for is 'extraordinary minister of Holy Communion'. The use of lay people in this capacity is allowed only in extraordinary situations.

Bishop Bruskewitz is DEAD ON.

The Catholic Church has shut out the Voice of the Catholic Faithful for the life of the church..
Try contacting some on with a big job in the Hierarchy of our church for an answer to a question.

And one fine Sunday, I accidentally wandered into an SSPX chapel; seldom have I seen such a collection of ignorant, arrogant, self-righteous little twerps.

Could you provide a few details? Where was the SSPX chapel located? What was the name of the pastor? Can you give examples of the arrogance and self-righteousness that was displayed? Can you explain why you defined the priest or the faithful (not sure to which you were referring) as "little twerps"?

There is only one SSPX Chapel in Virginia, it is located here:

Immaculate Conception Mission
804-222-3530
The Clarion Hotel
> VIRGINIA BEACH
1st, 3rd, 4th & 5th Sunday 4:00pm
2nd Sunday 4:30pm

This does not appear to be the Chapel you attended. While it is certainly true that different priests exhibit varying degress of abilities when it comes to the talent of preaching - from outstanding to acceptable - in my experience of attending SSPX Chapels, there have been relatively few sermons that I was not in complete agreement with. However to characterize the faithful and the priest as ignorant and self-righteous as you did after one brief visit to a Chapel that was obviously not SSPX was patently unfair.

Perhaps you should get your facts in line before making blanket statements. I doubt very much that you spoke with all the congregation and that they all displayed the characteristics that you describe.
