Actually, I think they should all go into court. That is, if it's a serious and proveable charge, it should go to the criminal sphere and be decided there. And then: prison if they're found guilty, and retirement to a monastery if they're not.

The reason for the latter is that a person unfairly charged would need time to rebuild his strength before going back into parish life, and in fact, might never be able to return to it. But a person who was actually guilty and somehow was not convicted would also get time to think about this and amend his life, and would also be subject to closer scrutiny. Perhaps this would dissuade him from trying it again.

The problem with all of this is that it assumes that the bishops (who are in charge of the priests, in theory) are orthodox. And it assumes that monasteries are places where people pray, fast and do penance. Those are assumptions I just don't think we can make anymore.

I think watching them in action today gave us a pretty good idea of just who is orthodox and who is not.

I know about some monasteries. My mother had an affair with a Brother in one of them and my parents divorced over it in 1973. And the Brother was not thrown out. And the Church annulled my parents marriage at my MOTHER'S request - all in the merry 70s!

But, what do you do? They would at least be out of circulation.

It isn't William Bennett -- it is his brother Clinton's lawyer. Oh NO!!!!!!!!

But Gov. Keating is good people, as they say.

May opinion of Bishop Gregory has gone up through all of this. I still have some reservations, but I thank the Almighty Father that he is the President of the USCCB and not Bishop Fiorenza who just went off as Pres.

Somehow, I am feeling very upbeat. Did you hear Frank Keeting talking about the new committee formed? He is an orthodox Catholic as is Bill Bennett. They love the Church and I have great hope that this will be the laity in action that we have been hearing about. But I don't think it is the same kind of action that Appleby and that awful woman from "Commonweal" were thinking about.

I'm watching the bishops' Mass for the Gift of Tears

Would it kill them to sing something in Latin? Couldn't they manage a kontakion or something for the Eastern-rite bishops? And couldn't they have gotten a religious who wears a habit to read the lessons? Couldn't they have arranged for some of the marvellous musicians who live in Dallas to play for the Mass instead of using the piano?

< / rant>

Damn! But maybe he listens to his brother! He is a very nice man, however misdirected he was in defending Clinton. But you know how lawyers are. I've seen the two brothers interviewed together and there is great love there, so we'll just have to hold out. Frank Keating is wonderful, IMO. Don't know about the lady judge.

In spite of my rant, I am feeling upbeat tonight too. But alas, it isn't William Bennett it is his brother, Clinton's lawyer. Bishop Bruskewitz and Cardinal George did such a good job that just the two of them, together with that very wonderful Eastern-rite bishop who talked about the bishop taking off his finery in order to carry the Cross of Christ -- he gave me great hope, and I don't know his name!

He's also a partner in Skadden, Arps -- which has a reputation for being cutthroat even for a law firm. This, of course, could cut both ways. Certainly, we could use someone versed in Skadden, Arps methods.

Why? (I think I'll have to wait for tomorrow to see your answer -- I'm nodding off this late.) I really am curious; you've probably seen more of him than I (with EWTN cutting out at noon on my cable service), but I really can't stand him.

Probably as rapidly as garlic would. (Sorry, I really am too tired.)

It was in watching him celebrate Mass this evening. And the press conference with Gov. Keating -- Bishop Gregory did a really good job IMO. So that is why my opinion has gone up. But then again before today my opinion of him was so low.......

I don't think Mary saw the Mass - I didn't either my EWTN cuts out at 9:00 PM and hers at noon, I think. I'm holding out on ALL of the Bishops except for a couple of them. I liked Bishop Gregory and then I found out (from you I think) he is one of "Bernadin's Boys" - but, none of us is beyond redemption if we are truly repentant. Maybe he (as well as others) are truly repentant and want to do what is right and True. That's what we've all been praying for!
