It seemed obvious to Peter (first Pope?) that there was SOMETHING man had to do to be elected fully, otherwise he would NOT have written this!

The Son is willing to save ALL whom the Father gives to the Son.

Thus, the nature of the Atonement is such that it is sufficient for all the sins of the whole world, but effective only for the elect.

• John 6: 37 - 38 -- All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Now, the verse you quoted in Peter does not establish that election is determined by man for this would set Peter to war with John. Peter merely encourages those who believe they are saved.
