I just found this, Nick. Thanks for posting it. Its bittersweet to see History_Matters' posts again. May he rest in peace.
Given the recent heated debates about Liturgy and the Mass, I think it might be a good time to carefully re-examine this article from Fr. Fessio.
A discussion what the Novus Ordo should be and not what it has become in many places may be a fruitful point of departure for the ongoing debates.

Funny that you should post this. I was thinking about History_Matters late last week and was trying to find some way at FR to search on posts. He always had interesting posts. I miss them.
A special prayer for History_Matters tonight!!

It is interesting to go back and see "where I was" in April. I found it interesting. BTW, I have a hard copy of the Fessio article. IT is interesting to note that many on teh right think him liberal and harming Catholism with his Ignatius Press and von Balthasar etc

Thanks for reposting this. I haven't been hanging out here all that long.
This article contradicts so many things I grew up with regarding Vatican II. I started going to a more orthodox parish recently, one rejected by the people in my life who are constantly in need of something "new and refreshing" and an affirmation that disagreement with the church on certain things is okay (it's not. Old church, a woman is always hand the Ciborium. New church - NEVER - it's always a priest). One person told me not to bother to join because sooner or later, they were just going to have to change like everybody else.
As for chant, it's SOOOOO much easier than the crap that's out right now and flows so wonderfully. Accompaniment is superfluous. I confess I do like the Gelineau Gradual, but it is more difficult. Now if we just teach the people that everyone CAN sing. It's just a matter of manipulating the respiratory system.
