The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Blessed Junipero Serra, OFM, Priest (Optional Memorial)
First Reading:
Responsorial Psalm:
Gospel:
Genesis 19:15-29
Psalm 26:2-3, 9-12
Matthew 8:23-27

The wise man should show his wisdom not by his eloquence but by good works; the humble man should not proclaim his own humility, but leave others to do so and recognize that the ability to control their desires has been given them by another. To Him be glory for ever and ever.

 -- Pope St. Clement l

The following is, as usual, from The Word Among Us:

The disciples had already seen Jesus' miraculous power over sin, sickness, and death. Now, during a storm at sea, they saw his dominion over creation itself. No wonder they asked, "Who is this man?" The disciples spent nearly three years asking this question, and yet they didn't really understand until the day of Pentecost. That's when Peter could say, "God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus" (Acts 2:36).

Who is Jesus to you? When you stare at the heavens or ponder the mystery of your soul, do you recognize that everything was made through and for the Son of God, who became man for your sake? Consider your experiences of God in your life, perhaps during Confession, at Communion, during a striking time in prayer or in Scripture, or when you were serving someone else.

As we experience things like the beauty of nature, human goodness, miraculous protection, or healing, or the grace to endure a difficult hardship, it becomes clear to us that God leaves no soul untouched. Perhaps we have not had the direct experiences of Jesus' power that the apostles had, but God has moved our souls to wonder why he has gone to such great lengths to care for us—and ultimately, his own death on a cross.

Who is Jesus? We can plumb the depths of this question for a lifetime and still not have an answer. Why? Because our Lord is infinite. His justice, power, and mercy are eternal. God delights in revealing Jesus to us more and more as we open ourselves to his presence in prayer and his rule in our lives. He delights in showing us that Jesus is capable of caring for our every need. While we will never fully understand who Jesus is, we have the promise that the Holy Spirit is always ready to show us even more—and so fill our hearts with his love.

"Father, thank you for sending your Son into the world to save me from evil and death. I trust that Jesus, who has stilled storms in so many lives, will lead me into your heavenly kingdom. May I follow you ever more faithfully each day."

----------

God bless.

Even the best can succumb... like, say, Al, did any more Cowboys get arrested while I was sleeping? ;-)

You're right ... that's pretty childish. BTW ... no, but one was shot outside a strip joint. ;o)

----------

DALLAS -- Dallas Cowboys backup safety Keith Davis, shot twice in a topless club's parking lot, was readmitted to a hospital for his wounds, his agent says.

Agent Byron Boston said he talked to the player on Monday. Davis, who was treated and released from Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas on Sunday, was readmitted the next day to a hospital in Irving, citing pain from wounds on his left hip and right arm.

But Boston said doctors are optimistic that Davis will be ready for training camp, which starts in San Antonio on July 26. Davis, too, said he expects to be ready.

"I really am blessed just to be here, though," he added.

It was uncertain whether the Cowboys planned to keep Davis on the roster, however.

Davis, 24, was shot early Sunday outside the Dallas Gentlemen's Club in an attack that also wounded club security guard Jacquois Thompson, 29, in the left hip and right arm.

"I'm fine. My hip is fine," the defensive back said Monday. "I'm walking around on it and just need to work it out. As far as my arm goes, I need to keep moving it around. I am having a hard time moving some fingers but I will be fine."

Thompson's condition was unavailable.

Amber Davis, the player's fiancee, contends that he was an innocent victim of an altercation that started inside the club and moved outside as they drove up to the club to pick up a friend.

"The whole thing started out inside and spilled outside to the parking lot," Dallas police Sgt. Paul Morris said.

Amber Davis said she was walking to her car when a vehicle drove up and a man reached out of the car and tried to grab her, putting a gun to her head.

Police were told that Keith Davis began to fight with four people inside the car. According to a police report, Thompson was pulling Davis from the car when four shots rang out.

"We have absolutely no reason why they tried to shoot us," Amber Davis said.

The second-year player spent most of the 2002 season on the Cowboys' practice squad.

He played in five games at safety and on special teams for the Cowboys last season.

----------

I sure do miss Landry.

If you don't like the way restornu or drsteve got the magic 00,

Frankly, I don't care about the so called magic 00. With the monthly cost of bandwidth being $2,700, and seeing the increase in spam posts, to obtain the magic 00, I can't help but wonder how much money is being pissed away to feed the vanity and egos of certain posters. Not unlike the people in government that feed their vanities and egos by endorsing bills full of 'pork' that waste taxpayer money.

As a financial contributer to FR, my hope is that it remains a top notch site. I frequently tell people I meet about FR and encourage them to visit, but I find it tiresome to also have to warn them about some of the jerks within its walls.

It is rude and disruptive to threads to suddenly have someone spam 40 or 70 posts worth of the same garbage and or image, just to obtain some magic 00 post.

Considering the fact that action was indeed taken, I come to the conclusion that someone in authority determined that spamming threads was not appropriate behavior.

I don't know how much simpler I can make it. Every time someone from a religious thread bothers Jim Robinson, he has another headache and another reason to shut down the religious forum.

So those of us on this thread don't bother him or the moderators.

I would like it very much if you simply respected the wishes of those who have made this thread a home long before you got here.

Yeah, the drive for the 00 posts can be annoying, but does it really eat up precious bandwidth? If so, how much more bandwidth is taken up by that than the ever present posts about moose, series, showers, all your base, etc?

Lighten up, ET.

Restornu's entire spam weighed in at 7,403 bytes

By way of comparison, one of your recent posts weighed in at over 20,000 bytes (with as little point, IMO)

You are consistantly the worst abuser of bandwidth this thread has had in quite a while, and as a financial supporter of FR I am requesting you cut it out, or cut it down

There's a big difference between a post and spam. My post also contained info pertaining to the topic of that thread. Whereas spam is just spam, with no redeeming value.

You can now go back to counting the keystrokes in my posts.

Paul tells gentiles in no uncertain terms that THEY are grafted onto the cultivated tree, the tree God has been cultivating, Israel. I think you mentioned this too:

You have injected a word here, that you’ve built your whole case on, and that word is “cultivate-ed.” It’s not used anywhere in the Bible, and the closest word to it is “dress-ed,” which can mean dressing meat or putting on cloths, but no where does the scripture say that the Gardner/God, nursed the tree it self, because the tree was the one solid and staple thing that God used that all Israelites would sprout from.

The forefathers salvation had already been proven and secured, they, the tree/base/root had no need of a caretaker, it was already established and in the past, it could never change.

That’s why Israel was the natural fruit, because their foundation was proven, and what they did and became in the future was up to them, they couldn’t blame their problems on the proven faith, of Abraham, Isaac or Jacob.

Israel was designated as a holy nation by God. Some OT that compare Israel to vines and trees:

Thank you for making my point with the next verse you quoted.

Isa 27:6 In times to come Jacob will take root. Israel will blossom, bud, and fill the whole world with fruit.

”Jacob will take root.” Jacob was the father of Israel, as was Isaac his father and Abraham his father, which made up the original tree/root, that the branches grew from, and now, thanks to the gardener/God grafting us Gentiles into the tree the forefathers became, we will blossom and bud, and fill the whole world.

Their can be no doubt that Abraham was the original root, and with the his proven faithfulness, and that of Isaac and Jacob, they became the tree, and their ancestors Israel, became the branches, and when they failed to produce good fruit, God broke them off temporarily, and grafted us Gentile Christians on to that good tree for a time.

It’s apparent, you need to believe that the tree is Israel, in order to justify telling everyone they must keep the Sabbath, the Levitical laws, and the Jewish feast days.

You seem to believe that because we are grafted in, we become as Israel, but Abraham Isaac and Jacob were not Israel, it was through them, that a nation came that was called Israel.

If I were to take a branch (scion) from one of my Valencia Orange trees, and graft it onto a larger and healthier Pink Grapefruit tree, it would still produce Valencia Oranges, not Pink Grapefruit.

The wild fig branch (the Gentiles) would use the nourishment from the healthy fig tree, (Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,) but it would never become one of the natural fig branches, (Israel), it would simply produce a good quality fruit of it’s own.

"In using the term mystery we do not mean any particular esoteric quality that may be revealed to the initiated, but the essential mystery of being as being, the nature of being as God's creation out of nothing, and therefore, something which stands beyond the scope of human comprehension.

"We do not come upon it only at the climax of thinking or in observing strange, extraordinary facts but in the startling fact that there are facts at all: being, the universe, the unfolding of time. We may face it at every turn, in a grain of sand, in an atom, as well as in the stellar space. Everything holds the great secret. For it is the inescapable situation of all being to be involved in infinite mystery. We may continue to disregard the mystery, but we can neither deny nor escape it. The world is something we apprehend but cannot comprehend…"'

"What the sense of the ineffable perceives is something objective which cannot be conceived by the mind nor captured by imagination or feeling, something real which, by its very essence, is beyond the reach of thought and feeling. What we are primarily aware of is not our self, our inner mood, but a transubjective situation, in regard to which our ability fails. Subjective is the manner, not the matter of our perception. What we perceive is objective in the sense of being independent of and corresponding to our perception.

"Our radical amazement responds to the mystery but does not produce it...We do not create the ineffable, we encounter it."

Abraham Heschel, Between God and Man
