Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
As to why you should respect Jewish authority on Jewish Canon, it's so dictated in scripture and reiterated by Jesus or dont you remember that oft quoted verse when Christ tells the people to do as they say but not as they do - respecting their office.
You might have missed out on the fact that it is the general consensus of the NCs here that Jesus was joking about that.

No I haven't. Our selection of kosher items around here is not great. The Jennie-O turkey dog is my hotdog of choice. Or even better, a beef brat. Yum!
You've got me there.
It is certainly possible to claim that the terms were used independent of each other, and for different purposes.
Yes. And (as I said) that "Rome" would not become a synonym for the Church until after the Empire fell out of influence.

Next time you get to a store in a metro area, pick up some Hebrew Nationals. You'll never buy the turkey dogs again. The Jews really know their dogs. :-)
I might have to get a "care package" together for ya, out there alone in the wilderness. LOL
Have they got bagels up there yet?
SD
;o)
No it isn't.
They've had them in the grocery stores for ages, but of the packaged variety, not fresh. The store bakeries make them too, but they are all wrong -- more like a dinner roll in the shape of a bagel, if you can imagine such a thing. But in the last several years we've had a number of specialty bagel shops spring up that make and serve the real thing.
Even if it was granted that Peter and the other apostles had this kind of establishing ministry, why presume that this authority survived the Apostolic age ?
Why presume it did not? (Other than the desire to reject the Churches who claim such an authority?)
Think of it this way.
The Scriptures say that JESUS is the chief cornerstone of the Church ... and that the Apostles are the foundation.
Yep.
When you build a house (building), you complete the foundation before you begin to build any of the rest of the building.
Yep.
If the Apostles ministry was foundational, and the Church was built upon that ministry ... is there any further need for any foundational ministry ?
Isn't each generation new? What exactly does "foundational ministry" mean?
Is it even appropriate to continue work on the foundation ... after beginning to build the main part of the structure ?
Who said anything about "continuing" work on the foundation?
The point is that as you are building your building you don't decide at some point that the foundation is superfluous.
The first century Church needed a foundation. The twenty-first century Church needs a foundation.

We answer to a higher authority
That's actually written on each package.
The store bakery bagels here are pretty good, though they do tend to be more puffy than chewy. The authentic bagel bakery in Pittsburgh used to have a bunch of satellite shops around the area, but they mysteriously failed. Those were really good, in a way that the chain bagel shops aren't.
We got some from a "Paneras" shop the other day and they were way too fancy. They have chocolate chip and 5 grain varieties, but they don't have the basics like egg and onion.

How is the Santorum thing playing in PA?
Well, I wasn't here, but it doesn't seem to be a big deal. The liberal paper will try to make it so, but they hate him anyway cause he's pro-life.
In the round-up of local politicians none seemed to think it was a killer. Even the dem governor pretty much said "you have to understand he's a deeply religious man."
We're not big fans of sodomy around here.

The Church (from the beginning to the present day) has always had a foundation ... that of JESUS (the chief cornerstone) and His Apostles.
