The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Oh well, all I was interested in was "The quality of mercy is not strain'd, It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven . . . ". I got that right anyway.

I had to memorize that passage in my high school sophomore English class!

Here is an analogy. Suppose we have two people. One is a truck driver, and the other is an electrical engineer. They both own television sets. The truck driver has the owners manual and the remote control, and can operate the television without trouble. But he doesn't know how the television works. The engineer understands everything that goes on inside the box.

Now I know it's SoothingDave speaking.

Dave, how did you post this under malakhi's signature?

I agree that they were looking for the messiah. I don't think, though, that they expected him to be a dying-and-resurrecting God-man. If so, I don't think the apostles would have been so surprised when Jesus prophecied his death and resurrection.

You are correct.

Israel was looking for one to free them from the oppression of Rome and to restore Israel to the height of her glory. Even after the crucifixion and resurrection, JESUS's own apostles were still focused on this outcome.
Acts 1:6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
JESUS' response indicates that there are other things to be accomplished first.
Acts 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
What I should have said, ... is that it appears that JESUS is the One whom the prophets were saying would come.

Soothingmalakhi?

I still wish he was Malachi. (Muh-law'-chee) That way we could call him the first Italian prophet. :-)

Israel was looking for one to free them from the oppression of Rome and to restore Israel to the height of her glory. Even after the crucifixion and resurrection, JESUS's own apostles were still focused on this outcome.

Yet there was one of the Sanhedrin who understood Messiah Ben Joseph was to preceed Messiah Ben David. Some of these Jews were tuned in.

John 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

You might find my analogy to be rather spindifferous, Reg...

but I know you agree with me in principle!

What is your constitution and how do you know what rights you have. The Bible is a founding document that tells us precisely what the message of the Lord was. Now, The NT scriptures we have derive from the Apostles.

Excelent post Havoc, that’s a print-off, and I'll have Ginny read it aloud later tonight.

Thanks JH :-)

The Bible is, as we say, the deposit of faith, the earth out of which faith grows. But if there is anything that is clear, the Scriptures were written down anonymously for the most part, by the disciples or Christ or their disciples, and only gradually collected over a period of two centures. The vast majority of Christians never owned, never saw, and probably never heard the whole book. What part they heard was in Church and always as interpreted by clerics. What they heard was never separated from the rest of tradition--that which was handed down from the first believers. The divisions in the Church, which were there from the earliest days, were always about what it was that was handed down. So if the Scriptures are a touchstone, they are also and always part of the debate. What WAS Scripture? What about Hebrews, what about Revelations, what about James, etc. What about Gospels other than the Four?

Robby, let me compliment you on your fine post. This is one of the finest statements of your belief I've read.

Needless to say I disagree with you, but at least you gave a clear concise explanation of what it is I disagree with.

Thank you for your effort.

JH

If Christ didn't die to bring us salvation, than what did He die for.

i'm not seeking the dead to give me guidance, or to forgive me, remember, I'm asking people who have risen to new life to pray for me. Again, I'll repeat-not to seek any type of truth, or even some type of spirtual gaces, but to plead with them to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Because for two reasons-
(1)Many Protestants are so quick to jump the gun and start having so many interpretations that you now have thousands of Protestant denominations...
(2)Now I'm saying that is why the RCC is much more, umm, all on the same page because there is a theology which interprets the Bible, so everyone learns that. That's why you don't see so many break away Catholic Churches.

No, you are wrong. There are many differnet Biblical passages that Catholics may disagree on, but all (well I should say almost all) Catholics are knit close together by a common theology. That is why you don't see much breaking away.

God seems to be quite accepting of the Catholic faith, considering it is the largest Christian religion.

Ok. So its a large Apostate church. Narrow is the way that leads to life, Wide is the road that leads to destruction. Many are called, few are chosen. And all that stuff.
