The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

I have a question for you. Why do you think (in your own opinion) the Pope did not accept Cardinal Law's offer to resign? I asked this of another Catholic on a different thread yesterday, and the reply was nonresponsive.

"Just between you and me, (wink wink, nod nod) just be patient. We have survived greater scandals. This thing will blow over in a few years."

(Posted just to get xxxx's blood pressure up. I don't really mean it).

He knows full well what my objection is, he simply doesn't have a good answer.

More disparagement. Maybe (fifth request) you can explain why one group picking and choosing is something to criticise, but you personally picking and choosing isn't.

Maybe someone else needs to explain it to you. I've tried 5 times, but you ignore me.

Your "freedom" is illusory.

I have said two or three times that the "freedom" I speak of is within limits and it explains the original objection (that there was an option of which to believe). I have said that this is not the same as the total freedom that Protestant mini-popes have.

So what is your problem? Maybe someone else needs to explain to you, cause I am giving up.

It just goes to show that anti-Catholics will criticise anything. If we are free to decide which belief we prefer, we are criticised for not having a definite answer. If we have a definite answer we are criticised for not having freedom.

You win. I give up.

Has it ever occurred to you I don't answer because I never said such a thing. Spin away.

When you resort to your usual "spin" words, "anti-Catholic", "Catholic Basher" and the like it is a sure sign you have no real, sensible, answer. Spin away.

Yeah, right. You didn't say this?

Let it be known that RC apologists pick and choose which of Augustines' writings are valid. They outright reject his "Peter is not The Rock and his "Sola Scriptura" sympathy. They do; however, think his "supremecy of Rome" idea is inspired. This is known an "cafeteria" theology.

I suppose "cafeteria" theology isn't meant to be a criticism? When will you grow up?

I said there are areas where freedom exists, and areas where it does not. Catholics are free to believe what they want in these areas.

This is equivalent to being told you have to eat crap sandwiches, but I'll leave it up to you how many, and whether you use salt and pepper or not.

OK, you have to believe that Mary was assumed into heaven at the end of her life. You are free to believe she died first, or that she did not die first. There are arguments for either side, and no definitive position has been made.

You use an example of Mary, and being able to choose what you believe concerning whether or not she was assumed into heaven at the end of her life or just after she died.

Your hierarchy gives you the statement that she was assumed into heaven, no choice in this matter, done deal, but if it’ll make you feel any better, we’ll give you two choices of when she was assumed.

(Doctrinal Statement) Joseph Smith was a prophet of God, but you can decide for yourself if he had an innie or an outie bellybutton.

Wow, isn’t it great to study daily as to whether these things are true or not? :-)

(^g^)

Very cute!

How does one arrange to have a girl? I'm not sure we can afford a fourth kid anytime soon so this may be my last chance!

Do girls have a patron saint? Does (s)he take requests? I'd ask Jesus but He's probably so busy with this war thing and all and if we have another boy I don't want word getting back to him later.

Answer the question.

If you could have only one book for your Scriptural knowlege would it be:

A. The Bible

B. The Catechism

-or-

C. Other. (Please explain).

I prefer to think of it as a lush verdant meadow where we sheep can frolic. There is a kind shepherd who keeps us from wandering off over a cliff or into dangerous land. But other than that, we are free.

You seem to have a different view.

Your hierarchy gives you the statement that she was assumed into heaven, no choice in this matter, done deal, but if it’ll make you feel any better, we’ll give you two choices of when she was assumed.

Yes. You seem to have a problem with that. Many people, flattered with their own intellect, bristle at the idea of actually following a leader. This is understandable, and a great reason why the "Reformation" has been as popular as it has.

The only problem is that Scripture clearly shows Christ instructing Peter to lead His sheep.

I'd get one of those CD-ROMs that has all kinds of stuff on it, including various Bible versions, Catechisms, Church Fathers, etc.

Actually I don't think it is that silly of a question. It is something catholics should think about. JMO:)
