The mutual self-gift of husband and wife underlies the requirement for “total fidelity” and the “unbreakable oneness” of marriage, Pope Leo XIV said at the general audience on Wednesday.
“The mutual self-giving of man and woman, such that ‘they are no longer two but one flesh,’ underlies the requirement for ‘total fidelity’ and the ‘unbreakable oneness’ of the spouses, finding vivid expression in the procreation and upbringing of children,” he said during his catechesis on Oct. 21.
He focused his reflection on marriage and the family, convinced that “the well-being of the individual and of human and Christian society is intimately linked with the healthy condition of that community produced by marriage and family.”
He stressed that the commitment to protecting families is “more urgent than ever before” and reminded “all those with social responsibilities, especially in the political and cultural spheres,” of their duty to “work efficiently for the welfare of marriage and the family.”
“The Church is well aware of this, as shown by the pastoral concern of the popes who have succeeded one another since the last council, right up to the two synodal assemblies convened by Pope Francis, which were addressed again in recent days by the heads of the Eastern Catholic Churches and the presidents of the episcopal conferences,” he said.
Leo XIV was referring to a recent meeting on the family he convened to mark the 10th anniversary of the apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia, attended by the presidents of bishops’ conferences from around the world.

And more good news! The Pope doesn’t require further treatment!!!
“Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora report the following regarding the popeʼs postoperative recovery: Today, the final histological examinations and molecular biology tests on the tissue removed during the Holy Fatherʼs surgery were completed. The results confirmed that it was pulmonary adenocarcinoma and that the disease was localized. A subsequent oncological assessment confirmed that no further treatment is necessary,”

Even the married couples can divorce and "marry" new "spouses" in the synodal "mercy church".

From the Pope's actual text of his audience (which EWTN did not even have the decency to link to):
Dear friends, this task is more urgent than ever before. The Church is well aware of this, as shown by the pastoral concern of the Popes who have succeeded one another since the last Council, right up to the two Synodal Assemblies convened by Pope Francis, which were addressed again in recent days by the Heads of the Eastern Catholic Churches and the Presidents of the Episcopal Conferences.
Notice that in today's audience the pope refers to the "pastoral concern" of only the post-conciliar popes and gives a special shout-out to Bergoglio's sin-nods.
No mention of the doctrinal and moral concerns of the pre-conciliar popes, including Pope Pius XI and his encyclical, CASTI CONNUBII.
Apparently the birth of the synodal "church" did not occur until VC II. Everything before that "monumental event" is irrelevant.
Out with "doctrinal"; in with "pastoral".

Note Bene: It’s quite interesting that EWTN provided hyperlinks to both Gaudium et Spes and Amoris Laetitia; but not a link to the pope’s actual speech today which is what the whole article was about.

Ah, an ebb tide classic technique: misdirection, selective outrage, and manufactured controversy.
Ebb, claiming that a papal audience affirming the 'unbreakable oneness of marriage' and strict conformity to 'divine law as interpreted by the Magisterium' somehow promotes divorce is a complete contradiction of the text.
Acknowledging recent synods and pastoral challenges facing families today isn't a rejection of pre-conciliar teaching or Pope Pius XI; it is simply addressing the living Church in 2026. Pastoral care doesn't eliminate doctrine—it applies timeless truth to modern souls. Distorting a clear papal defense of holy matrimony into a narrative of apostasy ignores what Pope Leo actually said.
Pope Leo Explicitly Defended Church Teaching on Marriage
your claim that Pope Leo is promoting "divorce and remarriage" is entirely contradicted by the actual text of the speech. In his audience, Pope Leo reaffirmed:
• The unbreakable oneness and indissolubility of marriage established by God.
• That marital love requires conformity to divine law as interpreted by the Magisterium.
• Strong, unwavering rejections of abortion and infanticide as violations of the sanctity of family life.
To frame a papal address upholding traditional marriage as a "mercy church" attack on doctrine is a total distortion.
THEN, the lame attempt to pit Pope Pius XI (*Casti Connubii*) against modern Popes, claiming the Church abandoned doctrine for "pastoral concerns."
• In Catholic theology, pastoral care flows directly from doctrine; it does not replace it.
• Popes routinely quote recent councils and immediate predecessors when addressing contemporary pastoral assemblies—just as Pius XI cited Leo XIII and Council decree traditions in his own era.
• A Pope acknowledging the pastoral gatherings of his immediate predecessors (Francis, Benedict, John Paul II) is standard papal continuity, not a repudiation of past centuries.

oh and complaining that a 500-word news summary on EWTN didn't hyperlink directly to the full transcript of a papal audience is a trivial procedural grievance.
EWTN summarized the content accurately
