The Archdiocese of Los Angeles allowed the performance of a “Misa Azteca” (“Aztec Mass”) concert, which featured pagan Aztec music, dances, and poetry in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels last month.
The sacrilegious June 27 event, held in the mother church of the largest archdiocese in the United States, combined the sacred music of the Catholic Mass, such as the solemn “Kyrie” chant and the “Ite Missa Est,” with pagan Aztec rhythms and indigenous instruments accompanying the cathedral orchestra.
The event also featured Aztec war dances being performed near the altar, with the dancers immodestly dressed, and Nahua poetry.
Joseph Julián González, the composer of the “Misa Azteca,” claimed that the Mass composition was born out of his devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe and recalled how he felt inspired to write it after the “Kyrie” from the High Mass played to an Aztec dance rhythm popped in his head, believing this was “divine inspiration.”
“It’s so beautiful, the way that God really wanted to bring all people, including the indigenous, to himself,” González said. “It enriches our knowledge of the Guadalupe event, and it enriches our Catholicism.”
While the Catholic Church has always sought to bring people of all cultures together, it has also always condemned the concept of syncretism, or the blending of pagan and other non-Catholic rituals, such as Aztec dances, with Catholic practices.

Furthermore, González saying that devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe inspired the creation of this composition is deeply ironic, as Our Lady appeared to St. Juan Diego to convert the Aztec and other indigenous peoples in the New World to the Catholic faith.
Despite the Church’s clear teaching, syncretism has become common in many Catholic churches across the globe in recent decades. Perhaps most scandalously, during the 2019 Amazon Synod, a ceremony honoring the Andean fertility “goddess” Pachamama was held in the Vatican Gardens before Pope Francis, cardinals, bishops, and priests.
A group that included Franciscan friars knelt and prostrated themselves, foreheads to the ground, before two wooden statues of Pachamama. The ritual was led by a woman with a painted face and headdress, who later processed to Pope Francis and placed rings on his fingers. A second woman brought to him a Pachamama statue, and Francis blessed himself before it, blessed it, and took it as a gift from the woman.
Following the ceremony, the Pachamama idols were processed into the Paul VI Hall, where the pope, cardinals, and bishops met for discussions at the Amazonian Synod. Later, the Pachamama idol would be processed into St. Peter’s Basilica, where, again, the pope and cardinals stood around it, praying.
Photos unearthed by Faith & Reason co-host Father Charles Murr earlier this year, also show then-Father Robert Prevost, the future Pope Leo XIV, attending a Pachamama ritual.

The Catholic church is the most debased it’s been in my lifetime. It really needs to take a hard look at itself.

Catholic history teaches that it can take years before it’s shown someone was not a schismatic or wrongly excommunicated, thus why one need not believe in real time someone is a schismatic or justly excommunicated just because someone declares them to be and why people should not believe “If the Pope says you’re excommunicated, you’re excommunicated, and if he doesn’t excommunicate the Germans they didn’t self-excommunicate.”
Constantius II put Pope Liberius under duress, Liberius then excommunicated Athanasius, there wasn’t a large block of bishops who said “We will not accept him being excommunicated, so Athanasius gets to stay,” and yet the exile of Athanasius effectively took place by Constantius II bribing Liberius.
Ironically, Liberius was not made to do public penance lasting even decades, like all the other Christians (even right before him) who broke under any form of imperial pressure, in a glaring example of massive hypocrisy.
And yet we see massive hypocrisy in how SSPX is treated in comparison to the notoriously defiant German Bishops (who are also formal heretics) along with all German priests in alliance with them, whom the Vatican knows still believe in and support female ordinations, gay marriages receiving blessings, etc.
In conclusion on this matter, just because it is said someone is excommunicated doesn’t mean it has to be accepted by all as having legitimately occured, even if the reasons for this occuring can vary. Each of them has to be proven as being valid excommunications.
And like the SSPX, Athanasius didn’t just sit back and take it saying “No matter how I was excommunicated, I just have to accept it!” No, in fact, while hiding in the Egyptian desert from imperial guards, St. Athanasius wrote his famous historical manifesto, the “History of the Arians” (Historia Arianorum). In it, he formally addressed the Pope’s actions: He explicitly told the Christian world that Liberius had stood strong for two years, and that what a man is “forced by torture to do contrary to his first judgment” must be blamed on his tormentors, not the man himself.”

I stopped watching TV news about 20, maybe 23 years ago and while I do indulge every now and then when I am in ahotel and it has cable TV, I realize the massive difference between reality and what the ‘news’ tells us.
Like we saw recently about Germans etc. coming to the USA and being surprised (hey, I just read that a few days a go, that’s one of the drawbacks of not watching the news :) ) - and I can tell you that the perceptions put in the news, on TV shows etc of the USA is something that you would not recognize.
In the same way, I was on a 2 week holiday in London earlier this month - in West Brompton, and traveling around the place and I was initially hesitant to go - what with all the scare tactics flying about.
The reality was nowhere near the perception.
What do I think about this based on what I've read?
A church’s identity as the ‘One True Church’ isn’t measured by whether every local cultural expression or border policy meets your personal approval. It’s defined by 2,000 years of apostolic succession, holding fast to the deposit of faith, and offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on every continent.
If the true Church were defined by the flawless behavior or perfect taste of all 1.3 billion of its members, Christ wouldn’t have picked Twelve Apostles containing both a denier and a betrayer.
The Church spans every race, nation, and tongue—just as Scripture promises in Revelation 7:9.
Catholicism isn’t a political party or an ethnic club; it’s the universal Church established by Christ in Matthew 16:18.
Pointing at a specific ethnic demographic or a controversial cathedral event doesn’t refute Catholic dogma; it just shows you’ve run out of theological arguments.
