Cash for St. John's abuse victims by month's end
The Catholic Register ^ | Oct. 11, 2024 | BY QUINTON AMUNDSON

Nearly 300 victims — or their surviving loved ones — who suffered abuse at Mount Cashel Orphanage in St. John’s, N.L., during the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s, or by Archdiocese of St. John’s clergy, will receive the initial disbursement of their long-awaited monetary restitution before the end of this month.

On Oct. 8, Justice Garrett Handrigan of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador granted an interim distribution of $20.9 million to claimants whose applications were approved by Global Resolutions, Inc., the Toronto-headquartered dispute mediation company that served as claims officer.

A further $1.7 million will be awarded once the estates of 38 deceased claimants submit the required testamentary documentation (notarized copies of last wills and testaments, death certificates).

Geoff Budden, the lead lawyer for the plaintiffs, told The Catholic Register that his clients view this development “as an excellent first step,” but they “wish us to do everything we possibly can do to see that they get the full compensation.”

The total bill due for the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John’s (RCESJ) is approximately $105 million. The Court of Appeal of Newfoundland and Labrador declared in 2020 that the RCESJ is “vicariously liable” for the atrocities that were committed at the orphanage that closed its doors in 1990 and was demolished in 1992, a decision that was upheld by the Supreme Court of Canada. The Christian Brothers of Ireland, the operators of Mount Cashel, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the United States in 2011.

To date, the RCESJ has created a distribution pool of $39.5 million for survivors by liquidating over 110 property assets and transferring the title, right and interest for 38 schools to the province and the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District.

Wait until these cases start being filed against public schools and libraries of pedophile grooming. It’ll make those priests look like Saints

Find this so utterly sad and disturbing. I was born in St. John’s, NFLD in 1956. My mother was from up around Conception Bay in Bay Roberts. She met my Chicago Yankee Air Force Dad in St. John’s in 1954.

I have always loved, admired, appreciated my Newfoundland Heritage. It breaks my heart to know about something like this. Because anybody and anyone that I’ve ever known or met or remembered, and I have a lot of relatives, nothing of the sort would have ever been talked about, condoned, etc.

Newfoundlanders are a wonderful people. I’m so grateful for the opportunities I’ve had to go back and visit over the years. My mom is still alive and Lord willing, has another 8-10-12 years to go. She hopes to outlive her mother who made it to 100 years and 8 months.

You need to add the Largest protestant sect to your list, the Southern Baptist ecclesial community to your list. Lets get all the protestant ecclesial communities covered as well.

https://www.texastribune.org/2023/12/29/southern-baptist-convention-sexual-abuse-lawsuit-settlement/

The data only goes back to 1998 to 2019, 20 year period, many were indeed young as 11. Some girls were 18 or 19 and seeing the Pastor, had an affair and were forced to have abortions by the local Baptist ecclesial community

When we learn fully to do this immediately, we will know better how yo help our fellow man in love....and not need lawyers adding additional duffering to both sides.

The loss of money teaches. The parishioners that gave their hard earned blessings to the Church fid do to help the needy and to honor God. The money they victims need gor therapy and schooling, they needed earlier during their abuse. These financially contributing parishioners...now in heaven or older...know fully why these people need help and as sad as the whole affair makes them, they love these once little ones and want them helped now where we could not help them far better before!
Lawyers slow everything down, multiply costs, but only because uncharitable bishops did not sufficiently protect and look out gor all souls, every soul.
