Episcopalian Priestess Says Jesus Sets a Bad Example to Follow

Rev. Elizabeth Riley is a flaming heretic and author of the book Rage Prayers. She is also the interim rector at St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, where she spews her particularly noxious brand of progressivism. During a recent sermon, Riley claims that Jesus’ treatment of the Syrophenician woman is a bad look for him, as well as a bad example to follow.

There are countless examples, and this is just one of them, where I see someone wearing the name of Christianity and I cringe because it does not look like the Christianity I want to be associated with. There are examples all of us have in our own lives. What’s worse is when you get to actual stories in scripture that make you go, ‘oh, that’s not quite the example of Jesus I want.’ And this is one of them.

Jesus and the Syrophenician woman. And I name this because we often aren’t given permission to say ‘I don’t like that thing in scripture’ because it is such a sacred text, but it’s a text that can handle some wrestling. It has withstood centuries. So we can argue with it a little bit. Jesus’s treatment of the Syrophenician woman is the last example of Christianity that I want.

She continues:

She is desperate, her daughter is suffering, and comes to Jesus begging for help, and he basically says that she’s less than a dog. I mean, it is not a good look on Jesus. And I hate that it is supposed to be upheld as a scriptural example for us. Because that’s not the Jesus I pray to. That is not the Jesus I know.

We’ve also tried to encapsulate Jesus into this one unmovable, unchangeable thing. But Jesus didn’t come just as full God walking around amongst us. Jesus came to be fully human. So I look to this scripture, not for Jesus’s divinity, but for his humanity.

Teachings of heresy straight from the devil’s hell. God will not be mocked by this wicked woman.

Rev. Elizabeth Riley is a Priestess!

Therefore, Christians need not heed anything she says!

This is yet another example of why I no longer consider myself an Episcopalian. Likewise I have many issues with Rome that guarantees I still can’t embrace my wife’s Catholicism.

I am a person who believes with no spiritual home.

I dated an Episcopalian several years/decades ago. He’s called himself a J.V. Catholic.

You could look around and check out other denominations that might be a good fit for you. After 75 years of being Baptist, I changed to another church.

In August of 2001 the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) estabalished a "Full Communion Partnership" with The Episcopal Church through the adoption of "Called to Common Mission".

Therefore:

This Gospel passage is always read in the Orthodox Church on one of the final Sundays before the start of the Lenten Triodion.

Part of the preparation for the preparation for Great Lent.
