Until 622 Muhammad lived in Mecca so he didn't have to go far to visit the Ka'ba. The Ka'ba was already the destination of pilgrims before him, for pagan Arabs.
Because the Muslim calendar is 11 days shorter than a solar year, the Hajj isn't always in summer. Muslims who feel the need to fulfill their obligation could wait 10 or 15 years and go when it's not such a hot part of the year.
