Dallas Jenkins Defends ‘The Chosen’ Season 4 Shocking Plot Twist

he Chosen Director Dallas Jenkins has defended a plot twist in season four of his hit Jesus show, featuring the Savior choosing not to heal the Apostle Thomas’s fiancee after a Roman official straight up murders her in front of them. According to Crosswalk Headlines:

The plot twist occurs at the end of Season 4, Episode 3, when a Roman official, Quintus, grows irate at his inability to capture Jesus in a large crowd and begins swinging a sword. In his anger, Quintus stabs Ramah, the fiancee of the apostle Thomas in the series. Quintus then flees the scene.

With Ramah lying on the ground, bleeding and dying, she urges Thomas to “stay with” Jesus. Thomas then pleads with Jesus to raise her back to life. A tearful Jesus expresses remorse but responds, “It is not her time. I love you, Thomas. He loves you. I’m so sorry.” Moments later, the credits appear on the screen.

We hesitate to think how many people will believe this story is somewhere in the scriptures. Thomas and Ramah’s relationship was frequently featured in The Chosen, and it will almost certainly play a crucial role in why Thomas is given the moniker “Doubting Thomas” following Jesus’ resurrection.

Responding to criticism and comments in his post-episode livestream, Jenkins offered:

“This was not something that we just did to be interesting or to be shocking. This is something that we have thought about and planned since season 1, actually — since we were first coming up with all seven seasons of the show. What you just saw is not something that took place in Scripture … but the truth, the spiritual truth of what we portrayed just now, is extremely important.”

“I am an inveterate discerner”

I too see the spirit in these stories. Jesus spoke in parables all the time that were not from the old testament scripture of his day. That must have infuriated the contemporary temple priests when they saw people flocking to hear him speak. The stories he told did not speak to everyone, especially them.

There are some who are trying to match Jenkins up with king james the first that have swallowed the camel. I love the new king james version of the bible, the language speaks to me, but it does not speak to everyone. It’s become a shibboleth, you will know them by their fruits. And it’s interesting to observe the human condition as we repeat history over and over.

Look, Jesus comes to the door. It’s closed.

Again.

This series led me to look at the works of Bishop Robert Barron

Barron is a heretic. He believes in apocatastasis. But he does do a lot of good things, otherwise

Is she refused healing because she played a lesbian in NCIS Los Angelos?

I’m not a fan of Chosen series as exact bible education (its not meant to be) but its not much different than any other bible based movie (the passion, 10 commandments, etc) or bible principle based drama movie. All are not biblical in ways.

Even the various versions of word for word dvds of the 4 NT Gospels act out the verses differently. And the Jesus actors portray Him differently (more serious, or humorous, more touchy or not)

If God uses the Chosen to soft hearts and make even just a few people ask God for help and it leads them on a path away from their old life to new, and seek after Him, that’s a similar path He led me on. Step by step away from my ways andwill and surrender parts of myself as i realized HE KNEW BEST.

No church message from any pastor is perfect, no bible study group, video, teaching is complete or exactly how God meant His words originally.

We are human and never will 100% know all until a time beyond this world.

The reason people are on this earth is to have a chance to choose relationship with God thru Jesus Christ for eternity with God.

If you’ve grown in Christ and see the flaws in whatever sermon or movie or bible study, great. It doesnt mean God isnt using it for good in someway for some people to help them see something they hadnt seen beforeaboutHim.

Those of you constantly putting down the chosen, do you also put down EVERY christian based movie, tv, church production, theater production?

Maybe you could learn something about yourself you havent surrendered or something God may want to bring to your attention by watching? I’ve learned to listen to sermons and my ears hear the part(s) that sound out of line but there are always parts in line with God’s word and i focus onthose.

You have to ask yourself this about TeeVee Jesus: Why did they have to inject this? What is the significance of injecting a story where Jesus CAN'T and WON'T heal a person? From the beginning they planned this into The Chosen. As people watch TeeVee Jesus they are absorbing into their spirit and soul a fictional character that distorts the Word of God. This one scene is just an example of how a group of people can execute a subtle plan to add to and distort scripture. They are doing it with success.

I prefer The Passion of the Christ and Jesus of Nazareth.

I also enjoy The Chosen.

I know that it is entertainment. It is NOT a substitute for reading and knowing the Word.

The movies Quo Vadis, The Robe, Ben Hur, The Greatest Story Ever Told were also Christ based but not literal translations.

If only one person is saved after exposure to this kind of entertainment, then it is a blessing.

And there goes the motorcycle over the shark enclosure. There are really great potrayals of some of the stories about Jesus in Chosen. I really like the woman at the well episode as well as the healing of the palsy.

But taking something there is no biblical or historical record of and trying to create a dramatic story whole cloth is basically using the name of God for monetary purposes.

If there were more, the scriptures don’t mention that.

John 21:25 And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.

I have something good to say about it. I find it extremely well-acted, intriguing and it has actually inspired me to pick up my dusty Bible and read parts again.

"Organized" church has pretty much failed me, for many reasons.

But I guess I'm a heretic, since I loved "Godspell" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" (even acted in both on stage in my younger years).

I'm aware enough to understand that this is a show, meant to entertain. Jenkins and others make this very clear in their after-show talks and on social media.

Yes, it's not Gospel truth, some scenes & characters are made up or taken out of time context, but maybe it can bring some to check out the true Word of God.

It's light years better than most of what you find in theaters and on TV these days.

In the beginning I didn’t mind that the show used a bit of creative license to develop the characters of the apostles. It helped humanize them and draw us closer to them. But adding major plot lines to the show which have nothing to do with scripture is another thing altogether.

Apokatastasis - I will be perfectly honest. I thought of myself as a well read Christian and have a good understanding of most of the early church fathers writings. But I have NEVER heard of this until you quoted it. Wow, a hole in my knowledge you could drive a truck through.

The only town I am aware Jesus performed no miracles in in the Bible was a town which misunderstood who Jesus was,and did not accept him.

If the show opens the door to Christ and the Gospel, then I'm all for it.

For me this show has renewed my desire to dig deeper into scripture. It has also pointed out somethings that I had let slip without realizing it.

I think it’s appropriate for the same reason that Ezra and other elders got up on a scaffold and read the scriptures, “and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading”. It’s why commentaries are written and read; it’s why sermons are constructed and preached.

There are passages of scripture which are subtle, vague and oblique. A person who knows how to ask about them, by reason of use, can obtain greater depth of insight about such passages by learning to listen to, and rely on, the Holy Spirit. It’s also possible to garner more meaning by hearing from a Spurgeon or a Vernon McGee, who were masterful in the art of making the complexities of scripture more plain, even more dramatic.

I think the “Chosen” series is such a tool. I’ve seen all episodes to date, and have found no fault in them; meanwhile I have been brought to tears often when I’ve seen those characters, and those events surrounding my Lord, dramatized.
