When the rural neighborhood of Lone Mountain, Nevada, stood up to the might of the Mormon church, they may have anticipated an explosive argument.
But not literally.
'We've had people setting off fireworks,' says resident Erin LeDoe. 'It was a neighbor who lives up against the mountain. They were setting off what were basically large cannons, right outside her backyard.'
Those behind the pyrotechnics are thought to be supporters of a planned Mormon mega temple - and members of the church itself.
Their target was a local woman who had fiercely opposed it, along with many of her neighbors, on the grounds that the proposed 216-foot tall building would dwarf their homes and destroy their peaceful idyll.
Despite its name, Lone Mountain is just one of several rural towns across America taking on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), commonly referred to as the Mormon church, over its plans to plant 'humongous' temples in the heart of their communities.
Residents claim the proposals ride roughshod over local planning rules, designed to preserve the character of these unique settlements.
Yet simply by defending their land, locals have ignited the ire of their religious neighbors, who have labeled opponents as 'bigots' and threatened to sue those who resist.
And while the church flexes its legal muscle, it mobilizes its members by issuing rallying cries to descend on town halls from far and wide in a bid to show their projects have mass support.
Ecclesiastical leaders say the size of these temples is 'essential' to their religious practice - and therefore protected by law.
But many of their own members have poured scorn on these arguments, while others have suggested it is merely a cynical ploy to bolster the church's vast real estate portfolio.

So is there an expectation that we are born again Christians here on Free Republic? Isn’t this a secular conservative site, not a religious site?
I don’t know enough about Mormon theology to know why I’m supposed to dislike their religion. But I also thought as this is a secular site, such theological discussions only create discord among us conservatives. There are conservatives who are of many faiths and of no faith on Free Republic.
I’m not promoting any religion. I’m just asking questions why we apparently are supposed to dislike a certain religion.
At least they biuld their own temples, rather than the constant hijacking of Christian churches by the accursed mohammedans.
build. Hate seeing a typo AS I hit “send/post”.
“Mormons”, like Harry Reid?
You are still playing games aren’t you.
You also don’t seem to know much about FR, yet here you are in the religion section playing games.
He’s still Da Man in the Wards and Stakes of NV!
Just another Jack Mormon marauding across the landscape...
Mountain Meadows wasn’t an aberration, it was a prequel
Individually Mormons are nice people. More than two of them become a cult.

No one told you what to do.
Educate yourself and think, if you’re a conservative.
—> But I also thought as this is a secular site, such theological discussions only create discord among us conservatives.
You are posting on the Religion Forum.
Some situational awareness would help you here.
Seriously? The religious bigotry represented in this thread is not only wrong but downright disgusting and disgraceful. Mormons are essentially Christian and they are probably more American than most religious groups in the country. They represent family values, conservative values, and it is seriously a shame to see people go out of their way to degrade the religion and the people.
Just like ISlime and their false prophet Mad Mo (pigs be upon him).
OK thanks. The religion forum is a place for theological discussion,so I will be more aware of that in the future.
Thanks for sharing your opinion.
—> Mormons”
I didn’t address Mormons, except as victims of the cult.
I mentioned the heresy of Mormonism.
It is one of the great American cults. You are correct.
they have 200 billion hidden away from taxes with front companies ....they can do whatever they want....this is what you get when you let them get away with SEC violations....IMO of course.
Mention of Mormons, blacks, or the Confederate flag are sure to bring out the bigots on FR, often the same people.
Not bigotry to hold true to Scripture…
To compare and contrast religion, is one thing, but too many people use this as an opportunity to disparage a group of people who are just as American probably equal or more conservative than most, represent the best of family values,, and are among the best of our citizenry.
Just one more example proving that DIVERSITY DOES NOT WORK. DIVERSITY IS A FALSE RELIGION LIKE MORMONISM
Agree! Mittens wasn’t just Conservative, he was “severe”!
