Motion To Abolish the Excretable ERLC Fails at SBC Annual Convention

A motion to abolish the ERLC at the 2024 Southern Baptist Convention has failed.

During the convention, Tom Ascol, President of Founders Ministries and senior pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Cape Coral, FL, brought forth the motion arguing that the truly awful, useless and reprehensible ERLC, formerly led by Russel Moore and now by the excretable Brent Leatherwood, should be defunded and written off, noting that “The last eight years, the ERLC has become increasingly distant from the values and concerns of the churches that finance it.”

Highlighting their financial mismanagement, wokeness, and opposition to true abortion abolition bills, such as when Leatherwood and the ERLC had a direct hand in killing the abortion ban in Louisiana, Ascol stated, “Many of us have pled with the ERLC to work for legislation that grants pre-born children equal protection under the law, but they refused to do so” and that “it’s time for us to call the ERLC to become accountable to the churches that pay for it.”

Sadly, it was not to be.

Knowing nothing about the ERLC (Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission), is this good or bad?

I don’t know, I was hoping someone here could tell me. As usual.

I would say that the use of the world excretable in the heading that the person who wrote this certainly is not fond of ERLC, but then this person's, writing this article, view may be opposite of what most believe.

This is what Wikipedia had to say:

Formerly known as the Christian Life Commission (1953–1997), the entity with organizational predecessors dating back to 1907 received its current name in the course of a broad reorganization of multiple Southern Baptist entities in 1997. The Southern Baptist Convention terminated its participation with the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Liberty in 1992 due to conflicts over separation of church and state and whether Baptist organizations should play a role in partisan politics. It was led by Richard Land from 1988 to 2013. Land announced his intention to retire effective October 23, 2013, after the uproar that ensued from his controversial comments about the Trayvon Martin case that resulted in an official reprimand by the ERLC's executive committee. Russell D. Moore filled the post afterwards. Moore is an outspoken critic of then-Republican Presidential candidate, Donald Trump. His criticism of Trump has been controversial with several Southern Baptist leaders.

The stated vision of the ERLC is an organization "dedicated to engaging the culture with the gospel of Jesus Christ and speaking to issues in the public square for the protection of religious liberty and human flourishing. Our vision can be summed up in three words: kingdom, culture and mission. Since its inception, the ERLC has been defined around a holistic vision of the kingdom of God, leading the culture to change within the church itself and then as the church addresses the world."

My take, based upon the highlighted & underlined text, is that this was bad, not good. They should have ousted ERLC.

The SBC is held together with scotch tape. They might as well make their divide final.

Knowing nothing about the ERLC (Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission), is this good or bad?

It's been headed by a slew of theologically weak, if not woke, wolves in recent decades, most recently Russell Moore.

If you do not know who Russell Moore is, consider that he recently willingly starred in a role in a nasty documentary film "God and Country" by Rob Reiner denigrating so-called "Christian nationalism" (i.e. Bibilical Christianity) as the greatest threat to this nation.

He kind of looks like Paul RINO (a.k.a. Paul Ryan). Anyone that works with Rob Reiner is a meathead also.

Thanks for the information. 🙂👍

My sister-in-law is a good friend and staunch supporter of Russell Moore. She nearly blew a gasket when I explained what a two faced snake he is. LOL! She was raised catholic, but married a Baptist minister. She hates Baptists, go figure.
