I knew about comets, but I had never seen one. Yet, I knew they existed. The famous one, Haley's Comet, wasn't due to pass Earth for many more years, and I doubted that I would be alive to see it. Still, it would be nice to see a comet.

In the mid-nineties, the Internet was just beginning to come into use. My husband was an early pioneer in that department, and he informed me that a new comet had been discovered, and might be visible to the naked eye sometime in 1997. It was called "Hale-Bopp" after the two men who independently discovered it. We were both fans of Jazz Music, so we dubbed it the "Be-Bop Comet".

Unfortunately, there were other people waiting for this comet with other-than scientific curiosity. They viewed the comet as a cover for a UFO that was going to whisk their devotees off the planet. This cult was known as "Heaven's Gate", and resulted in a mass suicide that shocked the nation.

Now before we get too haughty about the foolishness of the Heaven's Gate Cult, we need to remember that False Prophecies have caused some embarrassing moments in the Christian Religion as well, like "The Great Disappointment."

That being said, I DO believe in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, as do most traditional Christians. I also believe that current events show us that it will be not too far in the future. But I DO NOT set "Dates" for his Return. That is up to HIM and Him alone.

Simeon was a Believer in God's Word for many Years. He truly believed that The Messiah would come, even though he didn't know when. He studied the Torah and the Prophets, and believed the words. He waited with anticipation and hoped that the Coming of Messiah would be in his lifetime. He even boldly asked God to allow him to actually SEE the Messiah before he died. At this point in his long life, one would think he would have given up already, because the country was in dire shape. The Romans had conquered Judea, set up corrupt government and religious officials, crushed his people under the boot of oppression, and defiled the Holy Temple with commercialism and greed. Yet there he was, waiting.

Then...one morning, in comes a young couple with their Firstborn, to present and dedicate him to God. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit tells Simeon...It's HIM! HE'S the ONE!

The young couple graciously allow the old man, whom they had never met, to hold the Baby, and Simeon prophecies over Him. He is truly consoled and rewarded for his faithfulness.

Back to my original story.:

After waiting nearly two years, I forgot about Hale-Bopp. Then, one night, I stepped out onto the street to park my car in the garage for the night. And, there, all alone in the dark, I saw the comet in the sky. It showed up when I least expected it, when I had stopped looking for it or setting dates.

I saw Halley’s Comet in 1986. It was a real disappointment. Just a faint fuzzy cotton ball late at night. Its path was farther than the earth than the flyby in 1910.

I remember the Heaven’s Gate suicides. One of the cult members was the brother of Nicole Nichols (Lt. Uhura on Star Trek)

My great-grandparents told of the Great Disappointment. In Rome, NY, a large group of people laid down in a field awaiting the Second Coming. When that didn’t happen, they got up and went home. Your link to the Millerites links to Bahai, which is a Persian section with Shia roots. This made me think of the recent deaths of the Iranian leaders and what will happen to the Iranian people. God is moving. The Iranians need deliverance through Christ for sure.
