“King Joash did not remember the kindness Zechariah’s father Jehoiada ...”
That’s an understatement. Joash was a child hidden by Jehoiada from the usurper Athaliah and kept him from being killed...................
Love number 4 painting.
51- bible commentary said she was obsessed with ‘molesting the tongue that condemned her’ and took great delight in silencing his tongue. Not sure how the commentator knew that, but it’s a pretty good guess considering that his condemnations enraged her.
Lots of great paintings here. Too many to pick a favorite. Macabre theme, but the subject matter is treated with expertise by the greats in art.
File this one under No Good Deed Goes Unpunished.
This is the sixth of ten presentations of martyrs. I searched the entire Bible, and thankfully that's all I found. It was a creepy little project.
A lot,of the paintings I had seen as a child- I remember being creeper out by them then but admiring the artist’s work
Thank you, Dan. So many wonderful paintings, difficult to select favorites, maybe Moreau and Caravaggio. Verrocchio, #22 is splendid in its details (from the 15th c. silver altar of Florence Baptistery)
And an enthusiastic “WELCOME BACK” to you!
Thank you!
These paintings are just like the God who inspired them: beautiful.
GOD'S INSPIRATION >>>>produces>>>> BEAUTY
Augurs well for us in heaven.
That's a plausible explanation for that detail.
John used his tongue and “spoke truth to power”, and power retorted.
Good Morning Dan, and happy October to all.
The Word of God shines with truth, some difficult to watch...
But great paintings, nonetheless.
#25 Rodin; I was surprised that Rodin would make such a sculpture.
Thank You Dan.
Welcome back indeed etabeta; there were MANY art questions while you were gone...
But they remained unanswered =:^)
As was I, that day fifteen years ago when Cheryl and I visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art during a Rodin exhibition and THERE IT WAS right in front of us. Please believe me, Leon, when I say that it took every last bit of my forbearance to refrain from picking the thing up.
It had never occurred to me as being a potential subject for a sculpture, so as I stood there admiring it I was simultaneously overwhelmed by John's sacrifice and astonished by Rodin's imagination.
Well said Dan. I’ve been to that museum many times and loved it every time. Would love to see his museum in France. Always wondered why he used so many ‘unusual’ poses; some almost painful. Did they speak to his ‘state of heart’?
Thanks InkStone!
