WOMEN IN THE BIBLE ADVANCING THE GOSPEL
|
|
| | JOANNA and SUSANNA, GIVERS & SUPPORTERS | | |
LUKE 8: Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

ACTS 18: Paul left Athens and went to Corinth. There he met a Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to see them, and because he was a tentmaker as they were, he stayed and worked with them. Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

2 KINGS 22: Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem thirty-one years. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD. In the eighteenth year of his reign, King Josiah sent the secretary, Shaphan, to the temple of the LORD. Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the secretary, “I have found the Book of the Law in the temple of the LORD.” He gave it to Shaphan, who read it. Then Shaphan the secretary informed the king. And Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king. When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, he tore his robes. He gave these orders: “Go and inquire of the LORD about what is written in this book that has been found. Great is the LORD’s anger that burns against us because our fathers have not obeyed the words of this book; they have not acted in accordance with all that is written there concerning us.” [They] went to speak to the prophetess Huldah. She said to them, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Tell the man who sent you to me, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am going to bring disaster on this place and its people, according to everything written in the book the king of Judah has read. Because they have forsaken me and burned incense to other gods and provoked me to anger by all the idols their hands have made, my anger will burn against this place and will not be quenched.’ Tell the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, ‘This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says concerning the words you heard: Because your heart was responsive and you humbled yourself before the LORD when you heard what I have spoken against this place and its people, that they would become accursed and laid waste, and because you tore your robes and wept in my presence, I have heard you, declares the LORD. Therefore I will gather you to your fathers, and you will be buried in peace. Your eyes will not see all the disaster I am going to bring on this place.’ ” So they took her answer back to the king.

I admire Ciseri for including Mrs. Pilate walking away disconsolately. She doesn't understand--no one does at that point--that Jesus
wants this to proceed.
Didn't notice her the first few times I saw it, but now I can't take my eyes off her.

Good catch, Dan. I didn’t see her as my eyes were focused on Jesus and Pilate.

Masterful storytelling by Ciseri. He knows where our eyes will focus, yet she is in the foreground facing us. The joke is on us.

The Ciseri is stunning…the Bourgereau is also a fantastic presentation, almost as if a photographer just happened to get a lucky shot from an unexpected angle.

Seems to be a consensus forming around those two.
One more day focusing on the fairer sex, and then we’ll pursue other themes.

I think that is someone with a gift of finding the key to the entire scene and being able to present it on one canvas.

Not unlike the Ciseri as well!

Well said, Scott. IOW, the anti-Preller approach. Sorry

Yes, I’m not a big fan of Mr. Preller’s approach…

beautiful
There is no more beautiful woman than one who loves the Lord, serves Him, and seeks fellowship with other Christians
