WOMEN IN THE BIBLE
GRIEVING WOMEN

THE GRIEVING
WIDOW OF NAIN

LUKE 7:
Jesus went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a large crowd went along with him. As he approached the town gate, a dead person was being carried out—the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. And a large crowd from the town was with her. When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.”

Then he went up and touched the coffin, and those carrying it stood still. He said, “Young man, I say to you, get up!” The dead man sat up and began to talk, and Jesus gave him back to his mother.

TABITHA’S FRIENDS

ACTS 9:
In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which, when translated, is Dorcas), who was always doing good and helping the poor. About that time she became sick and died, and her body was washed and placed in an upstairs room. Lydda was near Joppa; so when the disciples heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him and urged him, “Please come at once!”

Peter went with them, and when he arrived he was taken upstairs to the room. All the widows stood around him, crying and showing him the robes and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was still with them.

Peter sent them all out of the room; then he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, “Tabitha, get up.” She opened her eyes, and seeing Peter she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then he called the believers and the widows and presented her to them alive. This became known all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

MARY AND MARTHA
MOURN LAZARUS

JOHN 11:
On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days. Many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

“Lord,” Martha said to Jesus, “if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.”

She went back and called her sister Mary aside. “The Teacher is here,” she said, “and is asking for you.” When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him. When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.”

When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. “Where have you laid him?” he asked.

“Come and see, Lord,” they replied.

Jesus wept.

MARY MAGDALENE
MOURNS JESUS

JOHN 20:
Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.”

At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

“Woman,” he said, “why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher).

Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet returned to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’ ”

Oustanding page today.
#1 Hugues Merle, prominent French artist of the 19th c.His style is reminiscent of that of Bouguereau. Merle had a life-long interest in religious imagery. Today he is almost forgotten.
All of Tissot.
#40 splendid Fouquet.
All of the paintings, sculptures of the Pietà.
And thank you for the gorgeous stained glass windows.

I’ve been in Spain since 2020. We have traveled everywhere. Hundreds of museums and churches. I’ve seen more religious art than any human could possibly handle. There are masterpieces in the most unlikely places. In a small, unassuming monastery in Valladolid, eight Goyas. At this point my eyes glaze over.

Mary’s profound sadness in Fouquet’s wrenches my heart. I am so thankful to the Holy Spirit for her, for Fouquet, and for inspiring someone to make available to us the detail, #41.

Probably my all time favorite Peta’, by this great 15th c. painter. He also excelled in miniature paintings for illuminated manuscripts.

Hanging directly above the altar!

(I'm guessing the speakers hanging on the walls are modern additions.)

Good Morning Dan, and hello to each of you.

What a display today! We see how the Holy Spirit inspires such talent and execution. Could never choose a favorite, while greatly enjoying the glass and sculpture too.

Thank You Dan.

So many great works in here but there is nothing anywhere in this realm like the Michelangelo. His gift from God was just…impossible in any other way. I am blessed to have been able to see a number of his works in person.

The words of the resurrected Jesus to Magdalene that you quote at the outset are deeply profound in their simplicity…”my Father and your Father…my God and your God.”

We see how the Holy Spirit inspires such talent and execution.

The Spirit is interacting with each artist, whether a believer or not, while first they contemplate, and then execute, and finally review their work. None is unaffected.

I love the little angels loving on Jesus in #47
Technically, angels are probably more like huge warrior types — but the little babies with wings have a sweetness and tenderness...

#57 is also striking
it is very simple compared to the other compositions
but Mary’s grief is unmistakable

and thanks again for keeping the gallery open so late for those of us who work long hours

The angels have known and loved the Son their entire lives, ever since He created them. They must have been completely devastated in watching His selfless suffering..
