In recent months, following the Covenant School Shooting, the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission head Brent Leatherwood has been outspoken in support of gun control legislation, throwing the lobbying power of the Southern Baptist Convention behind the gun control proposals of Tennessee Governor Bill Lee.
Leatherwood, whose three children attend Covenant School, supports the governor’s bid to bring red-flag gun control laws to Tennessee, which would result in the removal of guns from the possession of citizens without due process. But actions have consequences, and this move could be used in the future to nullify the second amendment rights of Christians who are deemed ideological enemies of the secular status quo.
The real story behind the Covenant School shooting is the fact that the shooter, Audrey Hale, a former student of the school, was an ideologically driven transgender activist who targeted the school for holding views diametrically opposed to her own. Hale detailed these reasons in a manifesto, which is being withheld from the public.
In addition to lobbying for gun control, Brent Leatherwood has joined the fight to prevent the release of the transgender shooter’s manifesto. Leatherwood claims that those who oppose the move to withhold the documents are “unhinged activists, unthinking partisans, conspiracy theorists, and various media outlets that value clicks over their community.”
If the manifesto was released and the public received a clear picture that the shooter was a mentally ill sexual deviant who chose to target the school because it held a Biblical view of sexuality, the push for gun control in the state would lose its momentum and politicians could focus on the real ideological issues behind the shooting.
If the manifesto were truly a nothing-burger that contained no new information regarding motive, there would be no reason for all of the legal gamesmanship on the part of Leatherwood and others to shield it from the public’s view.
Ironically, the ERLC head, who claims to have the ethical high ground, is trying to hide what happened in a desperate bid to salvage political gun-grab legislation. Several state legislators saw through these efforts in the spring session, resulting in a tabling of Governor Lee’s proposal. The governor has vowed to take up the gun control legislation in a fall special session.
Brent Leatherwood and the ERLC will continue to lobby for gun control, using Southern Baptist tithe dollars for a purpose that would undoubtedly lack support from most Southern Baptist church members.
If true, the Baptists are supporting a very bad policy.
Uh oh.
The SBC once again goes off the rails. Disband it and let each church go independent. I attend one, but don’t agree with church hierarchy (in any denomination). But it’s the only one we’ve found that preaches the Gospel, takes a hard stand against woke, has respectful music, etc.
The offerings we give strictly are for events and purposes of the local church — never funds that go to the “big guy” in Nashville.
I think our preacher is on the edge of taking us out of SBC.
Southern Baptist Convention is trash. Has been for decades. The only difference between today’s SBC and 80s SBC is who they pander to.
Amen.
Are you Tennessee Baptists PAYING ATTENTION???
“Someone please tell me what is going on here?!?!”
Here are the reasons to prevent the manifesto from public disclosure. It contradicts a narrative you support, and the revelation of the document will undermine or destroy your preferred narrative or actions. Or, you are afraid the contents will provoke like-minded individuals to action. Whichever it is won’t be obvious until we see the contents.
I remember them back in the 1980’s and they were on the up and up. What happened? When did they “go south” if you get my gist?
“I remember them back in the 1980’s and they were on the up and up. What happened?”
SBC is very cyclical. Decade good, then a decade bad; wash, rinse repeat.
Somewhere in the midst of this transperson going off the deep end....I believe she/he had a relationship going on with school officials (members of the SBC), and it’s probably more than two or three involved. So the manifesto probably mentions names and how crappy the mess had developed into.
“Are you Tennessee Baptists PAYING ATTENTION???”
Definitely paying attention.
Do you know if SBC is one of the NGOs on the border helping illegals invade — like the Catholic Charities organization?
No idea, but that wouldn’t surprise me one bit. What Tennessee Baptist (and many others) doesn’t enjoy a well-manicured piece of property? :-)
>> Someone please tell me what is going on here?!?!
Woke southern baptists reveling in the cultural vomit of the times.
Won’t be long before they’re embracing abortion and the alphabet perversions.
Many alleged Christians Churches are going woke even to the point of wanting AI to rewrite the Bible to “Correct” misinterpretations and of course apply “equity” for the demon possessed LGBT+ folks.
My gut feeling is the main reason why this guy doesn’t want the Manifesto released is because like any big church there is always a certain amount of dirty laundry per say with in the church that the leaders of the Church or denomination do not want the public to see. It is kind of like the Amazon documentary series about the Duggar family secrets. Any big Church as big as Covenant Presbyterian Church probably has a certain amount of dirty laundry that they don’t want the world to see. If the manifesto was released, people names would probably be mentioned(if not redacted),a certain small amount of peoples lives would be destroyed, empires with in Church would be destroyed, and a certain amount of money would stop flowing, I’m being sarcastic here, but I think you get the idea. Brent Leatherwood is just looking to protect the interests of the big churches in the SBC just in case there is a similar daja vue event that happens in one of their big Shiny Happy churches within the SBC.
You have to distinguish between some and all.
Not all So Baptists are the same. There are maybe ten different main cultures within the movement.
So this ERLC is the woke wing. They love everything left.
It’s really way past time for the SBC to split up, but they all want control of the schools and seminaries, so they stay together and arm wrestle for power.
Americans have a right to see this Dung Beetle turd roller manifesto. It must be really bad considering all the crap the RATS are going through trying to bury it. Must make the Trannies and their supporters look really bad. The gun nazis are involved in these murders also.
Pretty sure Brent Leatherwood is a latent homosexual. Look at his pics. My gaydar redlines.
First the Methodists committed church suicide, now the Baptists.
