Only 48% of Russia is Christian, while in the U.S. it’s nearly 70%. And about 13% of Russians identify as atheists, while it’s less than 5% in America. Even if you add atheists and agnostics in the U.S. it’s still fewer than atheists in Russia.

Russia was badly hit first by Peter the Great making the church into basically another department of the state and then by the Communists first crushing it (under Lenin and early Stalin) and then Stalin from 1941 onwards made it another department of the state

So the faith died -- there are still many strong believers, but there are many who just worship the state.
