“WILLIAM BRASSEY HOLE (1846 – 1917) was a Scottish artist, illustrator, etcher, and engraver, known for his industrial, historical and biblical scenes.

“Around 1900, he travelled to Palestine in order to study the background for biblical painting. There he began working on the 80 watercolours that would eventually appear as illustrations in his book The Life of Jesus of Nazareth. In 1906 these pictures were shown at an exhibition at the Fine Art Society in London. He also painted scenes from the Old Testament.”

Hello Dan, and what a show for today!

This artist is certainly a favorite. I love the fact that he did ‘first hand and in person’ research.

I admire the way he treats sunlight, especially at midday; you can literally FEEL the heat, and that stillness when everyone is moving to get out of the sun.

Would certainly seem to be required for anyone who intends to portray the Bible in volume.

I find Hole's works to be instantly recognizable, in the same way others have their own styles.

the other respectful thing about WBH work is that it is in watercolor
watercolor can be very unforgiving and is one of the more difficult mediums to master
