“LUCA DELLA ROBBIA (1399/1400–1482) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor from Florence. Della Robbia is noted for his colorful, tin-glazed terracotta statuary, a technique which he invented and passed on to his nephew ANDREA della Robbia and great-nephews GIOVANNI della Robbia and GIROLAMO della Robbia. “The vibrant, polychrome glazes made his creations both more durable and expressive. His work is noted for its charm rather than the drama of the work of some of his contemporaries.” excerpted from Wikipedia
“ANDREA DELLA ROBBIA (1435 – 1525) was an Italian Renaissance sculptor, especially in ceramics. Andrea became Luca's pupil, and was the most important artist of ceramic glaze of the times. “He carried on the production of the enamelled reliefs on a much larger scale than his uncle had ever done; he also extended its application to various architectural uses, such as friezes and to the making of lavabos, fountains and large retables.” excerpted from Wikipedia

That number 11 was like the carvings a fella in our church did, though they weren’t as Finely detailed as the one in 11. We all really appreciated and admired the carvings the fella did, and it added a lot of hometown artistry to the church.

it added a lot of hometown artistry to the church It's lovely when people allow the Holy Spirit to bless others through them, as your hometown fella did.

Remarkable artists.
The stained glass window at #2 is not a Della Robbia work. It is a medieval 16th c. stained glass panel from the Cistercian Abbey of Mariawald in Germany. Misleading of Wikepedia.

Good Morning Dan, and happy greetings to each of you!
Quite a family of artists. Appreciate you posting so much information about them. Really stunning work; amazing they’ve survived the centuries of fires and wars.
Thank You Dan!

What are the 2 details? (just curious)
These are all gorgeous, great job Dan!
As the foremost ox and ass specialist, I noticed they were very prominent in #6...
...did you catch them in #9?
To: etabeta
Thanks for the correction, Alba. I suspected as much....

With the Della Robbias, the “family business” was an unusual one.

What are the 2 details? (just curious)#10 and #11 are closeups--thus, "details"--of #9.

Hi etabeta and Dan, or anyone who knows:
So this artist family sculpted in clay, then made a mold (a slip casting mold?) to cast a ‘thin walled’ ceramic piece, which was fired? Then glazed, and fired again?
Or was it done another way? Surely they made more than one copy each? Or not?
In any case, these are VERY fragile; remarkable that any survived.
