All beautiful painting.
My favorite is # !1 by the 15th c. French Fouquet, master of both painting and manuscript illuminations. This masterpiece is known as the Nouans Pieta from the town in France. It is the only surviving panel of a much larger altarpiece and painted by the master in his later years.
The iconography is very original for the time, depicting the moment between the Descent and the entombment, when the body of the Christ, still supported by Niccodemus and Joseph of Arimathea, is laid on his mother’s knees. There is a sense of extreme softness, of silent and restrained sorrow, the inner pain revealed only by the tension in Mary’s hands and in her eyes reddened by tears. All the white on the left is echoed on the right by the tunic of the donor, superbly detailed by the artist. Behind the donor is St. James, holding his pilgrim staff. The modernity and originality of Fouquet is also seen in the position of the figures against a blue/green, semi-abstract background, in a way lifting this sacred moment outside of time and space.

Thank you, Alba, for that interesting analysis, which permitted me to view Fouquet’s work afresh. I was so glad to find the detail showing Mary’s agony.

What I love is the absence of theatrics as in many later paintings. It emanates extreme sweetness and sorrow. It invites to a long and silent meditation. Have you noticed how the pallor of Mary’s face echos the pallor of Jesus’ body?

It was restored in 1980 and the frame is the original 15th c. one.

I am ambivalent about the painting. While I admire the pathos he achieved with Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Nicodemus, the presence of a donor (and other uninvolved onlookers, when present) always detracts from the scene for me.

Yes, I understand that without the donor we would not even have this painting. But, in my view, donors who fund a painting on condition of their appearance in it not only clutter it unnecessarily, but they also loudly violate the Lord's dictum to give anonymously and self-effacingly.

That grabbed my attention, too. We had another strong effort by Bouguereau a few days ago—it’s a pity he wasn’t more prolific.

You have to put yourself in the mind of the Middle Ages people. Donors funded work for these artists, they wanted to memorialize their names and families but mainly solicit prayers for them after death.
I understand and agree with what you are saying but we do not live in Medieval times.

For some reason I like Greco and Van Gogh.

The reason, of course, is your personal taste, which no one can argue with. We see El Greco here frequently but Van Gogh rarely--not because of my personal taste, but because in Vincent's short life Bible scenes were not his specialty.

Thanks, Alba. My objection stands, but it’s good to know the full story.

Good Morning Dan, and mid-week greetings to all of you.

So many deep and touching paintings.
Also sculpture!
#21 Nocchi is nice; is that a relief?

What a place to gather Dan; we thank you sincerely.

etabeta, ‘Teaching Well’ is a gift; thank you for all that you contribute here.

Maybe you write for an art magazine, or an art auction house...

Looks like a relief to me. If it's a painting in-disguise, it is beyond amazing.

So many...paintings.

The paintings, etc., depicting the events comprising and surrounding the world's pivotal event are unusually abundant, as they should be. I am overflowing with them. For example, today's thread has 61 images, whereas normally I limit it to 50. My question to you is: is that too many? Do they all sort of run together? That's something I cannot judge, on this side of the screen.

Personally Dan, I enjoy looking at a great many. Run together? Each group depicts one topic (or sub-topics) so yes, many will be similar, but I spend more time with my favorites.

I have a lifelong love of art, but I’ve learned a great deal here, on HOW to notice certain things, and what those things mean.
