I am ambivalent about the painting. While I admire the pathos he achieved with Jesus, Mary, Joseph and Nicodemus, the presence of a donor (and other uninvolved onlookers, when present) always detracts from the scene for me.

Yes, I understand that without the donor we would not even have this painting. But, in my view, donors who fund a painting on condition of their appearance in it not only clutter it unnecessarily, but they also loudly violate the Lord's dictum to give anonymously and self-effacingly.
