J O H N «Chapter 19*» Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “I am thirsty.” A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

5 JAMES TISSOT "It Is Finished" Now it was the day of Preparation, and the next day was to be a special Sabbath. Because the Jews did not want the bodies left on the crosses during the Sabbath, they asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken down. The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water.

He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe. These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken,” and, as another scripture says, “They will look on the one they have pierced.”

Some amazing art thereIf you're an artist with this as your subject and you don't display your "A" game, then I think you'd have to turn in your "Artist" card.

I saw the Grünewald altarpiece in Isenheim.
It is unbelievably painful in person.

#33, then. Apparently, Grunewald accomplished his goal.

Once again, there is a lot of extraordinary art and thank you for presenting.
At first glance in #11, I see all this red. Much red. I am thinking that it is the blood that we reach through, to hold on to Jesus. When I scrolled down to see the bottom of the image, I realize that it is the red of the roman flags, cloaks and empire.

We will be singing His praises eternally......................... Absolutely! What he went through… Some years ago I had a test performed to to determine the oxygen level in my blood. It was a “blood gas analysis” test, which involved sticking a syringe into my wrist and drawing arterial blood from my arm. This test is notorious, because the needle passes through the bundle of nerves that run down the arm into the hand in order to reach that artery. Let me tell you, it hurts. The last time I had it done, they actually numbed my wrist first. My point is, that hurting as much as it did cannot even come close to what Jesus experienced, having a big iron spike driven through each wrist and having to support his weight on those two wrists, hurting as they did-along with everything else. I don’t want to go off on a tangent, but I believe the Shroud of Turin has to be the most accurate depiction of His injuries. I happen to believe that it truly is His burial shroud, but even if it wasn’t, it would not shake my faith one bit. We will never know what He went through for us. No act of faith we undertake will ever come close.

There are two backdrops for the deadly drama of Jesus’ crucifixion: the Roman occupiers and the Jewish accusers. But we miss the point entirely if we overlook the stage on which it occurred: our sinful need for redemption.

Someone anatomically knowledgeable has corrected me that it was the median nerve, not the ulnar. Should have consulted my son-in-law first, who does hand-and-arm therapy.

Yes. The very elaborate altarpiece was commissioned for the Monastery of St. Antony, patron against St. Antony’s Fire (ergotism). They cared for individuals with plague, ergotism, and other skin diseases. Christ was portrayed covered with plague-sores in sympathy with the guests of the monastery.

That’s the first I’ve heard of portraying Jesus mimicking illness in sympathy with the ill. While I understand the motive, I’m very uncomfortable with the practice.
