Mary Temple of the Holy Spirit Benedictine Monastery in Pienza received an Apostolic Visitation in November. In February, Francis imposed a new superior and forcibly joined them to a monastic federation without informing the nuns of the visitation's outcome.
Now, the nuns are fighting back, according to media reports. The convent was founded in Macerata, Italy, then moved to the Netherlands and finally settled in Pienza in 2017, welcomed by Montepulciano Bishop Stefano Manetti. Some of the nuns belonged to the Neocatechumenal Way. Most of them are young.
Bishop Manetti was appointed to Fiesole in July 2022 and his former diocese was attached to Siena under Cardinal Lojudice. The Vatican decided on the November visitation before Lojudice arrived.
The Vatican has never accused the nuns of any wrongdoing. They are appealing the crackdown and reject "any accusation, even remote, of disobedience and resistance, to the orders of legitimate superiors when they command according to law.”
