PETER'S THREE DENIALS OF JESUS

֎ Featuring 34 Paintings ֎

L U K E
Chapter 22*

“Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”

But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”

Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

But he denied it. “WOMAN, I DON’T KNOW HIM,” he said.

A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“MAN, I AM NOT!” Peter replied.

About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”

Peter replied, “MAN, I DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT!”

Thanks, Leon.

We all, like Peter, have gone astray.

Seghers, Caravaggio, Honthorst, Tissot, etc. All remarkable paintings.
#26 Le Nain, whom we have previously encountered. One of 3 brothers, artists of 17th c. France whose works were later admired by Paul Cézanne, Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet. Matthieu had the longest career of the brothers, and he is considered the author of the religious paintings.
#30!

It's interesting that so many of the depictions involve soldiers and guards. It certainly adds to the subtext that St. Peter feared for his life.

The lighting of Caravaggio's painting (and others) is certainly appropriate for this scripture - darkness and light . . .

Peter feared for his life

And yet he ventured into that courtyard willingly enough.

...darkness and light - very well put!

I was noticing the style, as I have come to learn here, as very Caravaggist.

If you had put #6 (the real Caravaggio) and #30 side-by-side and asked me to guess, I'd have picked #30 as being the 'real C'.

Dan has put together an outstanding 'chiaroscuro party'!

"Ventured" is exactly the word.

Torn between his love for the Christ and fear for his own safety, two steps forward, one step back.

A very natural state of mind.

A very natural state of mind.

I hesitate to appear judgmental by terming it "carnal", inasmuch as the Holy Spirit's constant presence was still nearly two months in their future. What a miserable lot they were--they had already fled--and it was about to get immeasurably worse. And Jesus let them experience it fully.

To drive home that point: Jesus let them wonder and stew for hours and hours, all day, on Sunday after the Magdalene's report, while he hung out with the two yahoos from Emmaus.

I agree . . . he clearly was bringing home to them the necessity of the Holy Spirit.

They were tough men, to bear all that.
