A very natural state of mind.

I hesitate to appear judgmental by terming it "carnal", inasmuch as the Holy Spirit's constant presence was still nearly two months in their future. What a miserable lot they were--they had already fled--and it was about to get immeasurably worse. And Jesus let them experience it fully.

To drive home that point: Jesus let them wonder and stew for hours and hours, all day, on Sunday after the Magdalene's report, while he hung out with the two yahoos from Emmaus.

I agree . . . he clearly was bringing home to them the necessity of the Holy Spirit.

They were tough men, to bear all that.
