AND ARREST |
It says ‘soldiers’ but they would not have been Roman soldiers, as it is sometimes portrayed in some of the paintings and in movies, they would have been Temple Guards under the command of the Chief Priest, Caiaphas. No Roman soldiers would ever be put under command of a foreigner...............
Yes, indeed. Regardless, they all carried those sharp pointy things.
VERY SHARP!...........................
They would definitely make an impression............................
Good Morning Dan, and happy Friday to each of you.
So many ‘best paintings’ indeed;
#1 Tissot
#9 Diotti
#31 Sculpture (is this wood? I predict that etabeta knows its story =:^)
#53 Stom
What a wonderful place to gather, and lift our King; thank you Dan!
Some great paintings to depict this vile event.
#1 Tissot. No shame or remorse in Judas expression.
#4 Guercino. This is a striking paintings. Notice the faint halo around the head of Jesus to show his divinity while the drama centers of the human Christ. The sense of motion by the jeering soldiers contrasts with the calm Jesus, lit by the soft light of the lantern, who leans toward Judas, an expression of pity and compassion on his face. Judas cannot look at Jesus, but his eyes go to the rope that is going around his master’s neck. He holds tight to his bag of silver.
#16 Joseph Feely. A very dramatic painting with the two figures lit by the torches of the approaching crowd.
#29 A beautiful fresco by an anonymous painter called Master of the Arrest, after this work. It is located in the Church of St Francis in Assisi.
#40 Douffet, a very esteemed Flemish painter.
#41 Cavaliere d’Arpino, late 16th. c. painting.
Good Morning, Dan. :-)
Yes, it is wood by Francisco Salzillo, 18th c. Spanish Baroque sculptor. He worked only on religious themes, high quality, highly expressive.
Great teaching etabeta, thank you.
#31 - do you know about this one? Thank you in advance.
Very appreciative etabeta; yes, very expressive indeed.
As The Chosen makes clear repeatedly, He doesn't NEED us to lift Him, but He WANTS us to lift Him.
Thank you, Alba. Judas soon realized that money was worthless....
The most recent episode of The Chosen featured Jesus' Mustard Seed promise in earnest.
I did not know this wonderful sculptor, I went through google images. Now glad we know who he is.
Apparently Francisco Salzillo has a museum in Spain. He has some very complex and beautiful pieces.
The world is full of masterpieces, we only get to know some.

Well said etabeta. There’s a man here who teaches sculpture at our local art museum, and he’s pretty good. But I doubt if he’s much known outside of our local area.
