J O H N «Chapter 13»* It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love. The evening meal was being served, and the devil had already prompted Judas Iscariot to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” “No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” “Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!” Jesus answered, “A person who has had a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean. When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.”

Many painters show Peter as an old gray haired man. I don’t know why............................

Puzzles me, too.
I don’t suppose anyone has grey hair in the Sweet By-and-By.

From your article:
"...why Peter is painted as the spokesman for the disciples – he’s the only one married, so therefore probably the oldest. But, as I said, we don’t have to infer that he was THAT much older, since his brother Andrew is still unmarried and he works with close friends James and John, also unmarried. So positing an age for Peter of no more than 25 is very plausible, in stark contrast to the 45 – 55 year old Peter in most plays, movies and other depictions."
The Chosen portrays all twelve as being younger than Jesus.

Which makes sense. Peter was most likely older than the others, with Matthew possibly being the approximately the same age as Peter.
The others were quite possibly younger than 20.
In the example given from Exodus where each male 20 or older was to pay the Temple Tax, Only Peter and Jesus were to pay the tax. Matthew may have been elsewhere at the time, or could have paid it from his own funds...............

As for the washing of the Apostles’ feet, modern day Westerner don’t really get or realize how much an act of humility that was.
Even to this day, showing someone the sole of your foot is a grave insult in the Middle East, regardless of religion...................

Love your introductory photo by Kim.
Many great paintings from the Early Renaissance to modern art.
#3 Edelfelt, one of the first Finnish artists to achieve international fame.
The illustration at #11
#14 by Spillo, like his cubist rendition.
#27 by the 18th c. sculptor Giuliani. He has another great sculpture of the anointing and drying of Jesus feet by Mary which I believe you previously posted.

Good Morning Dan, and good ‘New Week’ to all.
Greatly Enjoy your new ‘Opening Picture’. Isn’t that how our Savior reached down to rescue each of us? Pulling us out from a place of death.

#3 Edelfelt
Thank You Dan!

how much an act of humility that wasWhich added to the astonishment of the Twelve.
Due consideration suggests that the only act Jesus did that was even more humble than the way He came to earth is, having conquered death and saved humanity, the humble way he left.
His return will be anything but humble.

#14 by Spillo, like his cubist rendition.Sometimes, commenters express here their distaste of cubism in particular and modern art in general. What they ignore is the Holy Spirit's role in using every means at-hand to reach people. How can we know which image He might be able to employ in sparking the needed response from a lost or hurting soul?
