J O H N CHAPTER 8 Jesus appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and LEAVE YOUR LIFE OF SIN.”

Yesterday,
SisterK speculated that He was writing the names of her accusers' partners in their own adulteries.

They don't know what He wrote any more than we do.
Bear in mind that this story's authenticity is doubtful, not appearing in the earliest manuscripts.

Somehow, this same woman, got morphed into the person of Mary Magdalene in the first or second century. But there is no scriptural evidence of it, just ‘tradition’. And we know what Jesus said about ‘traditions’..................

Good Morning Dan, and hello to all.

#54 & #55 - essentially the same painting, different artists.
At a glance, the dark shape to the right, is suggestive of a wing, a dark, angel's wing - belonging to the 'accuser', who is holding/restraining/presenting the woman for judgement.
#55 is a better rendition imo, but look in the background - I'm not entirely sure, but I don't think spectacles existed at that time...so it's actually somewhat humorous (in a silly little detail sort of way)...

Thanks for comparing and contrasting them, John--I was hoping someone would.
I too am spectacles-skeptical (try saying that ten times fast!) in that age, enough so that several times I have omitted paintings because they're featured prominently.

aside from technique, composition and other art appreciation standards
the artist placed Jesus in front and in with most importance
less focus is on the woman - humbled, repentant and receiving grace
and in the hazy background are the accusers
As it should be....

Very well described, K. I would add only that the accusers seem menacing—in fact, lynch-mobbish.
