M A T T H E W CHAPTER 14* Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendants, “This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, for John had been saying to him: “It is not lawful for you to have her.” Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. On Herod’s birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much…

Prompted by her mother, she said, “Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.” The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted and had John beheaded in the prison. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.

Maybe getting deleted will force you finally to face the reality of damnation. It would be for your eternal good.

All remarkable paintings. #6 by Moreau, the great French Symbolist painter. His paintings are so richly detailed, using dramatic lighting to heighten the otherworldly effect.
#10 and #14.
#20 Caravaggio. Considered to be his masterpiece, the composition has perfect balance, from the group of figures on the left to the two witnesses at the window on the right. His typical use of dark shadows and shafts of light enhances the scene’s intense, silent drama. Under the face of John, is Caravaggio signature, making it look as if written in the blood of the Baptist.
Another painting I like very much is #28 by Chavanne.

Didn’t know about “Considered to be his masterpiece”. Makes me wonder about that same acclaim for other artists. Is there a listing somewhere of major artists’ masterpieces?

Aha! I see you’ve been to the J-Thread Already!
By the way, I have three questions:
1. What is your name?
2. What is your quest?
3. What is your favorite colour?
((((Oh, I see that your quest isn’t for the Holy Grail, since you already HAVE one! Your heart is the Grail, because it is covered by the Blood of Christ.)))

The Herod who beheaded John the Baptist was not Herod the Great (who died around 1 AD) but his son, Herod Antipas. Herod Antipas was technically not a king, although the NT refers to him in places as “King Herod”.

Right. It was Herod the Great (a misnomer if ever there was one) whose death permitted Joseph, Mary and Jesus to return from Egypt. If your dating is credible, then Jesus would have been about five.
I've long supposed that the magis' gold supported them through their journeys.
