The LORD God gave to Adam, the first man, the task of naming His animal creatures. Then, in the fulness of time He gave John the Baptist to name the incarnate Christ, the second Adam, as an animal. Not just any animal, but an unblemished lamb. In pointing to Christ as such, St. Andrew believed John, and then brought his brother, St. Peter, to witness the same. Little did they know at the time what manner of love the Father has for His creation in general, and poor sinners in particular. The cross to this day is not self-evident, but must be pointed to and preached in all the world to the end of the age, which, as a whole, is a great tribulation.

Good Morning, Dan, and thanks as always for the plethora of excellent Biblical Art. I favor the El Greco, among many others.

I like El Greco’s also, Tom. For me, he captured John’s gaunt intensity.

All great paintings of the Baptist. I especially like # 15 by Caravaggio. John the Baptist was one of Caravaggio favorite subjects. I believe he was the subject of at least 8 among his paintings. Here John, in the first of the series, is seen as a young man embracing a lamb, symbol of Christ as the lamb of God.
Jusepe Leonardo, #21; Mengs, #27 and Ivanov, #28 are all very expressive of the intensity and religious fervor of the Baptist.
Thanks for all the fenster!

All great paintings of the Baptist. What I noticed was how much all the Johns seemed to resemble each other, as though all the artists used the same model.

Good Morning Dan, and hello to all.
Many fine paintings today, and glass. Also sculpture.
#21 Leonardo
#28 Ivanov
#42 (sculpture; artist unknown. Looks somewhat rough to be marble; anyone know the artist, and the material? And, will marble even last outdoors over time?)
#45 (glass)
#48 (glass)
Great Work Dan, Thank You =:^)

Help yourself, Leon. Any that you fancy, you may keep.
If I do this series again, I'll just need to borrow them for a day.

I have never encountered the works of Fra Carnevale; he is magnificent. I would say after searching and finding one more of his rare works, he was one of the world’s greatest painters of antiquity.
To: Bookshelf
I have never encountered the works of Fra CarnevaleI don't recall seeing him previously, either. His John is certainly distinctive.

Dan, I’ve never before seen sculpture by El Greco, but now that I look, I’ve found several. I’m not certain, but I think your #40 is an El Greco.

Dan I was wrong; I neglected to follow back your source. It appears that the sculptor (carver) is Johannes der Täufer.

Johannes der Täufer is the German for
John the Baptist--the painting's title. As is so often the case, the artist is not attributed, which is why you see simply "Source" so frequently on my threads.
So, you might be right after all.
